Stamford Eparchy Clergy Gather for Spring Clergy Days 2026

STONY POINT, NY — The clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford gathered June 1–3 at the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians Don Bosco Retreat Center in Stony Point, New York, for the annual Spring Clergy Days, which this year focused on the theme “The Holy Sacraments of Our Church.”
The gathering provided an opportunity for prayer, continuing formation, fraternity, and discussion of important pastoral initiatives within the Eparchy.
The principal presenter for the Clergy Days was Very Rev. Archpriest Teodor Czabala, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Johnson City, New York, who also serves as Administrator in St. Nicholas in Elmira Heights, NY and Ascension Church in Sayre, PA. He offered a series of conferences exploring the foundational elements of the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Mysteries. Through engaging presentations and discussions, Fr. Czabala examined the theological meaning and structure of the Church’s liturgical life, encouraging the clergy to celebrate the Holy Mysteries with dignity, fidelity to the liturgical tradition, and careful attention to the rubrics.
A highlight of the gathering was the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on Tuesday morning, presided over by Most Rev. Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, together with the priest jubilarians of the Eparchy. During the Liturgy, the homily was delivered by Very. Rev. Mitered Priest Michael Bundz, Pastor of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Catholic Church in Utica, New York, who shared his personal vocation story.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the clergy gathered with Bishop Paul and the jubilarians for the traditional annual group photograph.
The final conference was presented by Very Rev. Bohdan Tymchyshyn, Rector of St. Basil Seminary, who introduced the Eparchial Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation Program scheduled to begin this summer. Fr. Tymchyshyn outlined the goals and structure of the initiative, which seeks to strengthen marriage preparation throughout the Eparchy and provide engaged couples with a solid spiritual and practical foundation for Christian family life.
The Spring Clergy Days concluded with a celebratory dinner in honor of the jubilarian priests, recognizing their years of faithful service to Christ, His Church, and the people entrusted to their pastoral care.

Bishop Paul Chomnycky Ordains Vasyl Proniuk to the Diaconate in Rome on the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius

On Monday, May 11, the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Teachers of the Slavs, a solemn Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Zhyrovytsi and the Holy Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus in Rome (Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians in Italy). During the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, Eparch of Stamford, ordained Subdeacon Vasyl Proniuk to the diaconate.In his homily, Bishop Paul reflected on the special ministry of the two holy apostles to the Slavic peoples — Saints Cyril and Methodius:“Saints Cyril and Methodius were servants — true deacons in the deepest sense of the word. The principal task of the diaconal ministry during the Divine Liturgy is the proclamation of the Word of God, and a deacon must not only proclaim it well, but also make the Gospel understandable to others, just as Saints Cyril and Methodius did. By creating the Cyrillic alphabet, they made the Gospel understandable to the Christians living in Eastern Europe at that time, and therefore also to us. The diaconal ministry is unique because it is a ministry of the Word, a ministry of the liturgy, a ministry of love, a ministry to God and His Church through prayer, a ministry at the altar. The deacon himself is a servant to those who may even be afraid to approach that altar,” the bishop emphasized.Bishop Paul then encouraged the candidate for the diaconate, Brother Vasyl, following the example of Saints Cyril and Methodius, to proclaim the Word in a way that people can truly understand, to build unity where there is division, to remain faithful in times of difficulty, and to draw strength from prayer. In doing so, he noted, the diaconal ministry becomes a witness: a witness that Christ is alive, that the Church is alive, and that love is stronger than any hardship.Especially moving was the presence of the newly ordained deacon’s immediate family. Standing beside Deacon Vasyl on this important day was his wife, Anita, who prayerfully shared with him the joy of this special vocation. Her presence became a quiet yet profound witness to spousal support. Also sharing in the joy of the celebration were his father, Fr. Myroslav Proniuk, his mother, Oksana Proniuk, and his sisters, Veronika and Maria, who supported Deacon Vasyl with their prayers on this important day in his spiritual life.This event marked an important spiritual milestone for the newly ordained Deacon Vasyl and a great joy for the entire church community. Clergy and numerous faithful gathered for the festive liturgy, united in prayer for Deacon Vasyl, asking the Holy Spirit to grant him abundant gifts, zeal in ministry, and God’s blessing upon his continued spiritual journey.May the Lord, through the intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God and Saints Cyril and Methodius, guide the newly ordained deacon in faithful and fruitful service to the People of God in the Eparchy of Stamford.

Від вечора неділі, 12 квітня, до вівторка, 14 квітня 2026 року, у Вінніпезі (провінція Манітоба) відбулася зустріч єпископів Української Греко-Католицької Церкви Північної Америки. Засідання проходили в канцелярії Вінніпезької архиєпархії, розташованій на берегах історичної річки Ред рівер.
Метою зустрічі, окрім зміцнення братерської єдності та взаємної підтримки між єпископами, було обговорення спільних викликів, що стоять перед Українською Греко-Католицькою Церквою в північноамериканській діаспорі, відзначення досягнень, та формування спільних стратегій на майбутнє.
Високопреосвященний владика Лаврентій Гуцуляк, митрополит Вінніпезький, приймав таких єпископів: архиєпископа і митрополита Філадельфійського Бориса Ґудзяка (Філадельфійська митрополія), єпископа Давида Мотюка (Едмонтонська Єпархія), єпископа Павла Хомницького (Стемфордська Єпархія), єпископа Венедикта Олексійчука (Єпархія Св. Миколая в Чікаго), єпископа Браяна Байду (Торонтонська Єпархія), єпископа Богдана Данила (Епархія Святого Йосафата в Пармі), єпископа Андрія Рабія (єпископа-помічника Вінніпезької Епархії), єпископа Михаїла Смолінського (Саскатунська Епархія) та єпископа Михаїла Квятковського (Нью-Вестмінстерська Епархія).
Упродовж двох днів канадські та американські єпископи провели окремі засідання своїх митрополій, які завершилися спільною пленарною сесією за участю всіх єпископів.
Єпископи заслухали короткі звіти про діяльність Патріаршої катехитичної комісії від єпископа Михаїла Квятковського, звіт про діяльність Патріаршої молодіжної комісії від єпископа Браяна Байди та звіт Патріаршої комісії у справах духовенства від єпископа Богдана Данило.
Серед інших питань єпископи обговорили труднощі, з якими стикаються нові українські іммігранти в обох країнах, а також можливості їх підтримки з боку парафіяльних громад. Вони також розглянули стан підготовки англомовного перекладу Божественної Літургії, який, як очікується, буде доступний для вірних до кінця цього року.
Єпископи підтвердили свою підтримку двом щорічним заходам: Дяківській конференції SingCon, яка відбудеться в парафії святого Іллі Української Греко-Католицької Церкви в Брамптоні (Онтаріо) з 10 по 14 вересня 2026 року, та Всеамериканській молодіжній прощі, яка відбудеться в Пармі (Огайо) з 11 по 14 червня 2026 року. Мирян з усіх єпархій заохочують брати участь у цих подіях.
Зустріч завершилася у вівторок увечері, 14 квітня 2026 року, урочистим бенкетом на честь високопреосвященного владики Лаврентія Гуцуляка з нагоди його 75-літнього Ювілею з дня народження та 20-ліття інтронізації як Митрополита Вінніпезького. Понад 400 єпископів, священників, монашества та мирян зібралися з цієї нагоди, щоб вшанувати свого дорогого архипастиря.

From Sunday evening, April 12 until Tuesday, April 14, a meeting of the Ukrainian Catholic bishops of North America was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the chancery office of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, located on the banks of the historic Red River. The purpose of the meeting, besides strengthening the fellowship and fraternal bond among the bishops, was to share and discuss mutual challenges facing the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the North American diaspora, to celebrate successes and achievements, and to plan mutual strategies for the future.

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Winnipeg, Most Rev. Lawrence Huculak hosted the following bishops for the meeting: Archbishop Borys Gudziak (Archbishop of Philadelphia, Metropolitan of Ukrainian Catholics in the United States), Bishop David Motiuk (Edmonton Eparchy), Bishop Paul Chomnycky (Stamford Eparchy), Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk (Eparch of St. Nicholas Eparchy in Chicago), Bishop Bryan Bayda (Eparchy of Toronto), Bishop Bohdan Danylo (St. Josaphat Eparchy in Parma), Bishop Andriy Rabiy (Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg), Bishop Michael Smolinski (Eparchy of Saskatoon), and Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski, (Eparchy of New Westminster).

Over the course of two days the Canadian and American bishops held their own separate Metropolia meetings, culminating with a final plenary session with all the bishops together.

The bishops heard short reports on the work of Patriarchal Catechetical Commission (Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski), the Patriarchal Youth Commission (Bishop Bryan Bayda), and the Patriarchal Commission for Clergy (Bishop Bohdan Danylo).

Among other topics, the bishops also discussed challenges faced by recent Ukrainian immigrants in our two countries and ways in which our parish communities can assist and support them, and the current status of work on the English translation of the Divine Liturgy, which, hopefully, will be in the hands of the faithful by the end of this year.

The bishops also confirmed their support for two upcoming annual events: the SingCon Cantors Workshop, to be held at St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Brampton, ON from September 10-14, 2026, and the All-American Youth Pilgrimage to be held in Parma, OH from June 11-14, 2026. Lay participants from all our eparchies will be encouraged to participate in these events.

The meeting ended on Tuesday evening, April 14, 2026 with a testimonial banquet held in honor of Most Rev. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak on the occasion of his 75th birthday and 20th anniversary of his Installation as Metropolitan of Winnipeg. Over 400 bishops, priests, religious men, women, and lay faithful gathered to fete their beloved archpastor on this memorable occasion.

Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!

Входячи у святі дні Страстей і Воскресіння нашого Господа, Церква запрошує нас роздумувати над таїнством, яке розгортається від тріумфального входу Христа до Єрусалиму у Вербну неділю. Наш Господь увійшов до Святого Міста, і Його з радістю вітав натовп людей. Діти співали: «Осанна на висотах! Благословенний, хто йде в ім’я Господнє, Цар Ізраїля». Разом із учнями єрусалимські мешканці раділи, вітаючи Христа.
Кожен із них ніс у серці власні надії та очікування. Люди очікували царя, який змінив би їхню реальність і визволив би їх від гніту римської влади. Багато з них очікували приходу політичного визволителя та правителя, який відновив би земну владу та встановив би справедливість.
Однак Христос, наш Спаситель, увійшов до Єрусалиму з іншою метою — заради Своїх Страстей, розп’яття та Воскресіння. Ті, хто радісно вітали Його пальмовими гілками, вже незабаром виступлять проти Нього й вимагатимуть Його розп’яття. Учні, що радісно йшли поруч із Ним, незабаром розбіжаться зі страху й залишать свого Вчителя.
Роздумуючи над цим Євангелієм у світлі нашого часу, бачимо, наскільки глибоко воно промовляє до сучасного світу. Наш світ тремтить від нестабільності та страждання. Сильні цього світу обіцяють краще майбутнє, водночас прагнучи підкорити інших в ім’я справедливості чи безпеки. Ми живемо у час глобального політичного напруження, соціальних поділів, насильства, невизначеності і моральної розгубленості.
Водночас Україна входить у ще один Страсний тиждень страждань, переживаючи руйнування і страх, ніби розділяючи рани самого Христа. Народ продовжує терпіти незаконне вторгнення жорстокого іноземного режиму, який прагне не лише захопити територію, але й погасити саму надію та життя. Попри страждання і жертви, люди з мужністю та вірою несуть свій хрест.
Проте, виникає питання: що ж змінило життя учнів після темряви Страсної п’ятниці? Що перетворило їхній страх на відвагу, а їхню невпевненість — на надію?
Поворотний момент настав тоді, коли вони зустріли Воскреслого Господа.
Радість Воскресіння завжди починається з особистої зустрічі з Христом. Що стало причиною того, що сльози Марії Магдалини змінилися на радість пасхального ранку? Ніщо інше, як зустріч із самим воскреслим Христом. Саме тоді, коли Господь назвав її на ім’я, смуток Марії перемінився на віру та радість. Після зустрічі з воскреслим Спасителем, Марія Магдалина вірно виконувала Його заповідь іти та сповістити учням Добру Новину про Воскресіння.
Воскреслий Христос бажає, щоб кожен із нас пережив цю саму радість зустрічі з Ним. Він кличе нас жити не для себе, а для Нього — визволитися від гріхів, що приводять нас до егоцентризму, та відкрити для себе благословення, що випливає з жертвенної любові Христа. Незалежно від того, що відбувається в нашому житті, ми можемо переживати духовну радість через Божу любов, живучи так, як Бог створив нас жити — у любові жертовній і самовідданій.
Євангеліє Пасхи — це не лише про нове життя загалом, але про особисто нове життя кожного з нас. Христос не лише воскрес із мертвих, але й Сам зустрічає нас і кличе по імені. Пасха — це зустріч, поклик і місія: «Ідіть і сповістіть те, що ви бачили й чули». Христос - живий. Ба, більше того, Він сам знаходить нас і кличе кожного по імені.
Якими б не були наші сумніви й страхи, падіння й зради, які б рани ми не носили й не намагалися приховати — сьогодні настає новий день. Ми покликані стати свідками Воскресіння Ісуса. Ми покликані нести світло Воскресіння в кожну людську ситуацію: у радісні моменти, роблячи їх ще прекраснішими, та в часи смутку, приносячи спокій і надію.
Тож переживімо радість пасхального ранку й випромінюймо її у своєму житті. Нехай милосердя Христа сяє у наших словах і вчинках. Як Господнє воскресіння принесло надію і нове життя Його послідовникам, так і ми повинні міцно триматися надії та працювати задля майбутнього миру, знаючи, що Христос завжди з нами.
Молимося, щоб наш Воскреслий і живий Господь щедро дарував вам та вашим близьким Свій мир і благодать, а також усім нашим братам і сестрам по всьому світу.

EASTER PASTORAL LETTER
OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHS IN THE USA
TO THE PRIESTS, MONKS, BROTHERS, SISTERS, SEMINARIANS, AND DEAR FAITHFUL

CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!

As we enter the holy days of our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection, the Church invites us to contemplate the mystery that begins with Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Our Lord entered the Holy City welcomed by crowds filled with joy. Children sang, “Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel.” The people of Jerusalem, together with the disciples, rejoiced as they welcomed Christ.

Yet each of them carried their own hopes and expectations. The people longed for a king who would transform their reality and free them from the oppression of Roman authority. Many expected a political liberator, a ruler who would restore earthly power and justice.

But Christ our Savior entered Jerusalem for another purpose: for His Passion, His Crucifixion, and His Resurrection.

Those who welcomed Him with palm branches would soon turn against Him and cry out for His crucifixion. The disciples who walked beside Him with joy would soon scatter in fear and abandon their Teacher.

When we reflect on this Gospel in the light of our own time, we see how deeply it speaks to our world today. Our world trembles under instability and suffering. Powerful forces promise a better tomorrow while seeking to conquer others in the name of justice or security. Political tensions at home and abroad, social divisions, violence, uncertainty, and moral confusion surround us.
At the same time, Ukraine now enters yet another Holy Week of suffering, enduring devastation and fear, as if sharing in the wounds of Christ Himself. The nation continues to endure the illegal invasion of a brutal foreign regime that seeks not only to conquer territory but also to extinguish hope and life itself. In the midst of suffering and sacrifice, the people carry their own cross with courage and faith.

Yet the question remains: what changed the lives of the disciples after the darkness of Good Friday? What transformed their fear into courage, their uncertainty into hope?

The turning point came through their encounter with the Risen Lord.

The joy of the Resurrection always begins with a personal encounter with Christ. What caused the tears of Mary Magdalene to give way to the joy of Easter morning? Nothing less than meeting the risen Christ Himself. When the Lord called her by name, her grief was transformed into faith and joy. And after encountering the risen Savior, Mary Magdalene faithfully obeyed His command to go and proclaim the Good News of the Resurrection to the disciples.

The risen Christ desires that each of us experience this same joy of encountering Him. He calls us to live not for ourselves, but for Him—to be liberated from the sins that trap us in self-centeredness and to discover the blessing of Christ’s self-giving love. No matter what may be happening in our lives, we can still experience spiritual joy through the love of God and by living as God created us to live: in self-giving love.

The Easter Gospel is not only about new life in general, but about new life that comes to each of us personally. It is not only that Christ was raised from the dead, but that the risen Christ meets us and calls us by name. Easter is an encounter, a call, and a mission. “Go and tell what you have seen and heard.”

Christ is alive. And more than that—He has sought us out and called us by name.

Whatever our doubts and fears, whatever our failures and betrayals, whatever wounds we carry and try to protect—today is a new day. We are called to become witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus. We are called to bring the light of the Resurrection into every human situation: into joyful moments, making them even more beautiful, and into times of sorrow, bringing serenity and hope.
Let us therefore experience the joy of Easter morning and radiate this joy through our lives. Let the mercy of Christ shine in our words and in our deeds. Just as Christ’s Resurrection brought hope and new life to His followers, so we too must hold fast to hope and work for a future of peace, knowing that Christ is always with us.

Our fervent prayer is that our Resurrected and Living Lord may bestow His peace and grace upon you and your loved ones, and upon all our brothers and sisters scattered throughout the world.

Christ is Risen!

On April 2, Holy Thursday, the Most Reverend Paul Chomnycky, OSBM, celebrated the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great with the Rite of the Washing of the Feet at St. Basil Seminary, together with the clergy of the Eparchy.
In his homily, His Excellency thanked the clergy for their dedicated service, encouraged them to continue serving their parishioners with humility and devotion, and congratulated them on this sacred day on which Our Lord instituted the Mysteries of the Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders.
Following the example of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper, and as the Gospel was being proclaimed, His Excellency set aside the emblems of His episcopal office—the omophorion, panagia, and sakkos—and, with a towel wrapped around His waist, proceeded to wash the feet of twelve priests.
This sacred rite stands as a living icon of humble service, calling all the faithful to minister to one another in love, after the image of the Master who came not to be served, but to serve.
