It was another beautiful Sunday at Bethel! We sang praises unto God and honored fathers and father figures for the impact in our lives. Congratulations to Bro. James Beckford who was recognized by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. as Father of Year. A special thank you to Rev. Rahsaan Hall for the Word, A Father’s Wisdom! We have been truly blessed. Happy Fathers’ Day to all Fathers and Father Figures, from Bethel!

Today was a day for community! We were representing at the Juneteenth unity parade and cultural celebration. It was wonderful to see all the youth and black owned businesses in Stamford. We gathered at Jackie Robinson park where we raised the Juneteenth flag and recommitted ourselves to the work of freedom. shoutout to YPDer Cordelia Beverly who taught us about the history of Juneteenth and what it means to her. Thank you to the entire Juneteenth planning committee including two of our members Maya Angelou Spruill and Dominique Moore. God is in our midst!

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.

This celebration of Freedom is to be cherished by not only African Americans but all those who believe that all people are created equal and made in the image of Almighty God. Juneteenth reminds us that we should not give up hope on God and humanity because together we are capable of the beloved community that Jesus commands those who follow him.

As we observe Juneteenth, we are invited to reflect on where our society is today. It is holy and sacred ministry to demand that we do not go back to the chains we were delivered from. We are invited to identify our role in the journey toward freedom and equity for all. We are invited to celebrate in community with one another as we partake in the joys and struggles together. We are invited to seek the Lord and bask in the glory of our TRUE Liberator, Jesus the Christ. Who himself said that he was sent to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight to the blind and to set the oppressed free.

May the Lord restore us this day for the journey ahead. Happy Juneteenth!
