Mystery or certainty?
07/08/2021

Mystery or certainty?

Which one would you want:
certainty or mystery?

The question catches me off guard.

Certainty, I want to say. The absolute answer. Tell me why they died. Tell me why You didn’t heal them. Tell me where they are now. Tell me what comes next.

But in the instant I am answering, I am changing my mind. I am bumping up against the shallow bottom of certainty. I am realizing answers would never be enough.

Mystery is what we were made for. Where we came from and where we are going. Depths beyond definition, layers beyond layers, love opening and unfolding into more, birthing new beyond all telling.

Mystery is endless, eternal, infinite enough for ever and everyone.

Oh, how I wanted certainty, I did. I chased it long and hard, worn out ragged and breathless. I prayed and I cursed and I shook my fists so hard at the heavens I was convinced clarity would pour down like rain.

But mystery showed up, silent and steady, strong and gentle. Setting aside my quest for certainty. Showing me another Way.

Mystery was what first breathed life into lungs—mine, yours, theirs—and mystery will lead all us all beyond this, turning tensions into truth strong enough to hold.

Certainties will crumble, I hate to admit. But mystery will last and last, never exhausted, ever renewing.

I want that, I can say now.

I want that.
