Thank you for opening this conversation on equity. So many people are raising concern about funding being used to support housing development, especially construction of new housing. If you look at the funding that is allotted to the City of St. Louis through federal funding like Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) over the past 2 decades you'll get a very clear picture of why development needs to be done on the north side of the city, and most especially where the funding can come from to provide newly constructed homes for people who lost everything in the tornado. Plus, you will find out where there is funding to rehab homes. However, most importantly, the benevolence of the people in our region can go a long way to respond to the needs of those most adversely affected. But there has to be someone who issues the Clarion call. If you inbox me at Velma Bailey, I can share more with you.
The EF3 tornado that ripped through north St. Louis one year ago exposed the cityβs long history of neglect in the area, which to many people is the driving factor of the cityβs slow response.
Now many north St. Louis families are worried that long-term displacement will increase vacancies and create more population loss.
βIt's hard because we want to hold on to our legacy. A lot of these homes are generational homes," said one resident.
