Eldon Francis Arteaga
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and Uncle, Eldon F. Arteaga, who left us on January 20, 2025, at the age of 88. Eldon was a man of remarkable character, knowledge, and a gifted photographer, whose presence touched countless lives. Eldon was defined by his extraordinary talent and passion for capturing the essence of life, and his deep connection to his community.Born on March 9, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri, Eldon was the son of the late Robert and Leola Arteaga. Eldon is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carolyn Arteaga, their three children, Tamara, Cynthia, and Bradley (Kristina); grandchildren, Melissa, Phillip (Tiffany), Erica (James), Heather, Morgan, Madison and Dominic; and great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Samantha, Peyton, Tyler, Carter and Kinsley, all of whom held a special place in his heart.At the age of 18, in 1954, he joined the family photography business, Arteaga Photos, alongside his father and older brother, the late Wayne Arteaga. Together, the trio became iconic figures in the St. Louis photography world, preserving the heart and soul of the city through their lenses. Eldon’s keen eye and dedication to his craft made him an indispensable part of the family business, which became known for capturing not only the important moments of history but also the small, beautiful details of everyday life.In 1957, Eldon felt a strong sense of duty and enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country. His time in the military shaped much of who he was—loyal, disciplined, and always putting others first. He was deeply proud of his service, and the values instilled during his time in the Army remained with him throughout his life. His commitment to his country and the lessons he learned in the military were a constant source of pride for Eldon.After returning home, Eldon resumed his work in photography, continuing to contribute to the Arteaga legacy. His work spanning over 70 years, captured everything from iconic landmarks like the Gateway Arch to unforgettable moments with celebrities, including the Rat Pack. He was also proud to serve as Jimmy Hoffa’s personal photographer during the labor leader’s time in St. Louis. Eldon’s dedication to unions and labor was evident not only in his photography but also in his deep involvement with local labor movements. His images appeared in countless local publications, exhibitions, and archives, showcasing his commitment to both his craft and his community.Through the decades, Eldon’s photographs became an integral part of St. Louis’ visual history, offering a timeless glimpse into the city’s people, places, and culture. His work captured both the monumental and the everyday moments of life, preserving the essence of the city and its residents in ways that continue to resonate today.A celebration of Eldon’s life will be held at a later date, to be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shrine of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.Rest in peace, Eldon.
