SLU Catholic Studies Program

SLU Catholic Studies Program Engaging the Catholic Intellectual Tradition from the Heart of St. Louis. What is Catholic Studies? Who is it for? See our website for more information.

The Catholic Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences offers interdisciplinary and integrated study in the intellectual and social traditions of the Church from the New Testament period to the present. The program is designed to explore major questions that have occupied Christian philosophers and theologians, artists and literary writers, political theorists and historians, as well as

natural and social scientists for two millennia. In addition to a variety of courses in the Christian intellectual tradition, Catholic Studies offers interested students opportunities to explore the history and mission of the Society of Jesus and the traditions underlying Saint Louis University as a Catholic, Jesuit institution. Along with course work, the program also offers a variety of social and spiritual activities. The Catholic Studies Program is for students of all religious faiths and all academic majors who seek an undergraduate experience that more deliberately focuses on the unity of knowledge and inter-relationship that exists among disciplines through the lens of the Catholic and Jesuit intellectual tradition. The Minor in Catholic Studies would be an important credential in applying for graduate school or for employment after graduation. No matter what field of study you have as a major and no matter what profession you might pursue in the future, this program would be a great help in developing critical thinking, skills in written and oral communication and it will enhance your capacity to "see the big picture" through the course of your SLU education. Since most of the courses applicable for the program also fulfill requirements in the core curriculum, obtaining the Catholic Studies Minor could well involve only the addition of the senior capstone research course, depending on the core courses one has selected in the first few years at SLU. Prayer to St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin, Protector of Families, Terror of Demons, and Patron of the Dying:

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so
strong, so prompt before the throne of God,
I place in thee all my interests and desires.

O St. Joseph, assist me by thy powerful intercession
and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through
thy foster Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, so that, having
engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may
offer thee my thanksgiving and homage.

O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee
and Jesus asleep in thine arms. I dare not approach
while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my
name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him
to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath.

St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for me.

Coming off of Mardi Gras soon and going into Lent, the Holy Father gives us words of great wisdom to guide our faith and works for the next 40 days.

First, we listen. We hear and absorb God's will in our lives and pray for His deep devotion to us to liberate us from the clutches of sin and allow us entry into eternal life.

Second, we fast. We recognize where our hunger for earthly things is try to release our appetites. Maybe you spend too much time on a mobile game, and could try putting down your phone to focus on prayer?

Above all, the Holy Father emphasizes that we do this together. We are a family and Church that lives out the journey of Christ, and unites itself closer to His sufferings during this Lenten season.

At the end of all this, we remember we are an Easter people, and alleluia is our song!

Pray for us here at Catholic Studies during this Lenten season, and know we pray for you as you unite yourself to the Lord in penance and almsgiving.
