He went to the police station just to look out for his friend.
He became the man who paid the heaviest price for a crime he didn't commit.

1990.
New York City.
The cold cells of Rikers Island.
Korey Wise. 17 years old.

Before he was an activist, he was a kid from Harlem with a heart of gold. In 1989, he wasn't even a suspect. He only went to the precinct to support his friend, but once he was inside, the system turned on him.

Because he was 16, they treated him as an adult, interrogating him until he gave a statement just to go home.

He was the only one of the "Central Park Five" sent to adult prison.

In 1990, he was convicted despite no physical evidence linking him to the crime.

While the others went to juvenile centers, Korey was thrown into the toughest prisons in New York. He spent the next 12 years moving from one cell to another, facing violence and isolation, all while refusing to lie and say he was guilty just to get parole.

He survived a hell that most people couldn't imagine.

His nightmare finally ended because of a chance encounter in a prison yard.

He ran into the real attacker, who eventually confessed to the crime. DNA evidence confirmed the truth in 2002, proving that Korey and his friends had been telling the truth for over a decade.

He didn't let the walls of prison break his spirit.

He stayed in prison longer than any of the others, serving over 13 years before he was finally freed. He used his settlement to help others, founding an innocence project to fight for those the system forgot. He turned his pain into a platform, making sure no other child has to go through what he endured.

He didn't just walk out of a prison gate.
He walked into a life dedicated to changing the world.
He became a legend of the Exonerated Five.

They thought they could lock his story away forever.
They thought he was just another number in the system.
They were wrong.

In 1990, he was a boy facing a life of shadows.

Today, his name stands for the light of truth.
And we are still moved by his courage.
