Feast of the Virgin of Charity of Cobre
Sept 8 is the feast of the patroness of Cuba, a country that has forever left a mark on my heart. I have led and organized many journeys to Cuba, and I'm sad that I cannot offer that now because of the conditions on the island. Extreme poverty has become the norm there in recent years. While the causes for that are largely due to the system that has been created there, the embargo has contributed to the suffering of the Cuban people, despite the intentions of the US government. Please pray for the Cuban people, and ask for the intercession of Mary to lift their spirits.

Our students recently attended a 2026 spring break trip to St. Louis and the surrounding area organized by Saint Christopher Journeys. Our students were able to go deeper into their understanding of the history of slavery and racial injustice in our country and walked away from this experience with a desire to work for justice in their own communities. We were also grateful to have the opportunity to give back to a community in need through our work with a local parish's outreach ministry. We look forward to working with Dr. Maher and Saint Christopher Journeys in the future!

Our students had a great experience on the March 2026 Tolton/Black Lives Matter journey in St. Louis and beyond. They really enjoyed our house and neighborhood where we stayed. We had many meaningful experiences and learned a great deal about Fr. Tolton and grass roots organizations focused on social justice. Praying at the site of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson was a very impactful experience. I would highly recommend Dr. Maher and Saint Christopher Journeys for your next trip.

Independence Day
250 years ago, the United States became the first country in the Americas to throw off the shackles of colonialism. In the founders' declaration were some revolutionary claims--claims they said were "self-evident," needing no further proof or explanation. They stated that we are all created equal, and that we have God-given rights that cannot be taken from us--life, liberty, and to pursue our own paths to happiness.
We know that the reality of life 250 years ago did not match these ideals, and still falls short today. But I want to focus on just what it meant to take this leap forward in human history. What the founders declared set the path that so many other countries would follow.
For 250 years, we, the people, have held together a nation around a common set of values--ideals that guide us. That's pretty amazing.

Spring Break in Merida
In March 2026, the University of St Francis in Fort Wayne and St Mary of the Woods outside Terre Haute made their second journey to Merida to work with Marista University and their community centers. They stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Mexican medical students and healthcare providers to serve the Mayan community. They not only worked in healthcare; they also provided children's activities. Many thanks to professors Michelle Hileman, Abby Hurles, Crystal White, and Rev Chris White for their leadership! Thanks also to Sol Gordillo and all the staff at Marista U!
