Spring Break in Merida
In March 2026, the University of St Francis in Fort Wayne and St Mary of the Woods outside Terre Haute made their second journey to Merida to work with Marista University and their community centers. They stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Mexican medical students and healthcare providers to serve the Mayan community. They not only worked in healthcare; they also provided children's activities. Many thanks to professors Michelle Hileman, Abby Hurles, Crystal White, and Rev Chris White for their leadership! Thanks also to Sol Gordillo and all the staff at Marista U!

Offering a New Destination: Memorial Freedom Rides
Take your group on a road trip to visit key locations in the Civil Rights era: Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Memphis. You can expand to stations on the Underground Railroad in Ohio and Illinois. You can also expand the themes by visiting the Choctaw community to learn about the Trail of Tears, or the Delta to learn about sharecropping and the Blues, or Nashville to learn about women’s suffrage.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion Epiphany
January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany, the great revealing of the Infant Jesus, when the three kings came to find the Messiah--the 12th day of Christmas. I was hosting a couple friends for dinner on Sunday, and I decided to buy a king cake at a market on Cherokee Street, the center of Mexican culture here in St Louis. In Spanish, a king cake is called a "rosca de reyes" or "wreath of the kings." I noticed something on the box that I had never seen before. The kings were each seated on a different animal--a camel, a horse, and an elephant. It was clearly to emphasize the idea that they came from three continents--Asia, Europe, and Africa. Many of us are familiar with the tradition of three three kings depicted as Asian, European, and African, to show that the birth of Jesus was for the whole world (at the time of Christ, before contact with the Americas). To show this, artists began to represent the three kings as racially and culturally diverse. I did a little digging online, and this practice began in the 1100's. The importance of intentional representation is not a new idea nor a secular idea. It's been in Christian art for nearly a thousand years.
