Did you know there are different types of priests in the Catholic Church?

Diocesan priests serve a specific diocese under the leadership of a bishop. They usually serve in parishes, celebrating Mass, administering the sacraments, and caring for the spiritual needs of their local communities.

Religious priests belong to a religious community or order, such as the Congregation of the Mission. In addition to priestly duties, they live in community and follow specific vows that guide their mission and way of life.

Vincentians are Roman Catholic priests and brothers who live in community and serve the poor. Members of the Congregation of the Mission, founded by St. Vincent de Paul, are dedicated to serving the poor and forming others to continue Christ’s mission of charity.

Vincentian priests and brothers live out their mission through sacred vows that guide every aspect of their lives. This month, we will learn more about the Vow of Obedience.

Fr. Ray Van Dorpe, C.M., explains: “The answer may be found in the word “obedience” itself. (Warning! Nerdy etymology ahead!) The word obedience comes from two Latin words: “ob,” meaning “to,” and “audire,” meaning “to hear.” To obey, then, is to hear or listen deeply to another.”

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the mystery of one God in three Persons: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is the central mystery of religious faith and life, acting as the source of all other mysteries.

This solemnity reminds us that God is a communion of love, inviting us to live in unity, faith, and love with one another.

Today we remember Blessed Marta Anna Wiecka, a member of the Daughters of Charity who dedicated her life to serving the sick and the poor.

Sister Wiecka took her Vows in 1897 and lived her vocation with humility and courage. In her work she was known to care not only for the physical needs of the sick, but also for their spiritual needs. She is remembered for her selfless love, especially when she gave her life after contracting typhoid fever from caring for a patient with a contagious illness.

Her life reminds us that true charity is shown through simple acts of love and faithful service to others.

Did you know there is a special connection between the Vincentians and the Miraculous Medal?

The Miraculous Medal has its origins within the Vincentian Family. In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, a novice of the Daughters, in the chapel of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, a chapel belonging to the Vincentian community in Paris.

During these apparitions, Mary showed St. Catherine Labouré the design of what we now know as the Miraculous Medal and asked that it be made and shared with the world. With the support of Vincentian priests, the medal was created and quickly spread far beyond France, becoming a powerful sign of faith, hope, and trust in Mary’s intercession.

Because of this history, the Miraculous Medal remains deeply connected to the mission of the Vincentian priests and brothers and the Daughters of Charity , who continue to promote devotion to Mary and serve the poor in the spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul.
