WHY CATHOLICS MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS ?

Since we make the Sign of the Cross before and after our prayers, many Catholics don't realize that the Sign of the Cross is a prayer itself. It should be said with reverence; we shouldn't rush through it on the way to the next prayer. The Sign of the Cross is not merely a pious gesture but it is a powerful prayer.

Using your right hand, you should touch your forehead at the mention of the Father; the lower middle of your chest at the mention of the Son; and the left shoulder on the word "Holy" and the right shoulder on the word "Spirit."

"In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

So what the Scripture, the Church Fathers and saints, and Catholic teaching tells us more about the Sign of the Cross.

Here six perspectives on the Sign of the Cross that revealed why making it opens us to life-transforming graces.

I share them here, confident that once you grasp them, you will make the gesture with more faith and experience its great blessings.

I. MINI-CREED

The Sign of the Cross is a profession of faith in God as he revealed himself. It serves as an abbreviated form of the Apostles’ Creed. Touching our forehead, breast and shoulders, we declare our belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We are announcing our faith in what God has done — the creation of all things, the redemption of humanity from sin and death, and the establishment of the Church, which offers new life to all. When we sign ourselves we are making ourselves aware of God’s presence and opening ourselves to his action in our lives. That would be enough, wouldn’t it? But there is much, much more.

II. RENEWAL OF BAPTISM

First-century Christians began making the sign of the cross as a reminder and renewal of what happened to them when they were baptized. It still works the same way for us. When we sign ourselves we are declaring that in baptism we died sacramentally with Christ on the cross and rose to a new life with him (see Rom 6:3-4 and Gal 2:20).

We are asking the Lord to renew in us those baptismal graces. We are also acknowledging that baptism joined us to the body of Christ and equipped us for our role of collaborating with the Lord in his work of rescuing all people from sin and death.

III. MARK OF DISCIPLESHIP

At baptism the Lord claimed us as his own by marking us with the Sign of the Cross. Now, when we sign ourselves, we are affirming our loyalty to him. By tracing the cross on our bodies, we are denying that we belong to ourselves and declaring that we belong to him alone (see Lk 9:23). The Church Fathers used the same word for the Sign of the Cross that the ancient world employed to indicate ownership. The same word named a shepherd’s brand on his sheep, a general’s tattoo on his soldiers, a householder’s mark on his servants, and the Lord’s mark on his disciples.

So signing ourselves recognizes that we are Christ’s sheep and can count on his care; his soldiers, commissioned to work with him in advancing his kingdom on earth; and his servants, dedicated to doing whatever he tells us.

IV. ACCEPTANCE OF SUFFERING

Jesus promised us, that suffering would be a normal part of a disciple’s life (see Lk 9:23). So, when we mark our bodies with the sign, we are embracing whatever pain comes as a consequence of our faith in Christ. Making the sign is our “taking up the cross and following” him (Lk 9:23). But at the same time it comforts us with the realization that Jesus, who endured the crucifixion for us, now joins us in our suffering and supports us.

Signing ourselves also announces another significant truth: With St. Paul, we are celebrating that our afflictions as members of the body of Christ contribute to the Lord’s saving work of perfecting the Church in holiness (see Col 1:24).

V. MOVE AGAINST THE DEVIL

When the devil sent Jesus to the cross, he mistakenly believed he had won a great victory. Instead, the Lord surprised him with an ignominious defeat (see 1 Cor 2:8). From the first Easter morning through the present, the sign of the cross makes the devil cower and flee. So on one level, making the sign is a defensive move, declaring our inviolability to the devil’s influence.

But more importantly, the sign is also an offensive weapon, helping us reclaim with Christ all that Satan lost at the cross. It announces our cooperation with him in the indomitable advance of the kingdom of God against the kingdom of darkness.

VI. VICTORY OVER THE FLESH

In the New Testament, the word flesh sums up all the evil inclinations of our old nature that persist in us even after we die with Christ in baptism (see Gal 5:16-22).

Making the sign of the cross expresses our decision to crucify these desires of the flesh and to live by the Spirit. Like tossing off a dirty shirt or blouse, making the sign indicates our stripping ourselves of our evil inclinations and clothing ourselves with the behaviors of Christ (see Col 3: 5-15).

The Church Fathers taught that the Sign of the Cross diffused the force of powerful temptations such as anger and lust.

So no matter how strongly we are tempted, we can use the Sign of the Cross to activate our freedom in Christ and conquer even our besetting sins.

There will be a series of wars until the last war, which will then be fought by the ten kings of the Antichrist, all of whom will have one and the same plan and will be the only rulers of the world

"The seasons will be altered, the earth will produce nothing but bad fruit, the stars will lose their regular motion, the moon will only reflect a faint reddish glow. Water and fire will give the earth's globe convulsions and terrible earthquakes which will swallow up mountains, cities....

". . . The Vicar of my Son will suffer a great deal, because for a while the Church will yield to large persecution, a time of darkness, and the Church will witness a frightful crisis. The true faith of the Lord having been forgotten, each individual will want to be on his own and be superior to people of the same identity. They will abolish civil rights as well as ecclesiastical, all order and all justice would be trampled underfoot and only homicides, hate, jealousy, lies and dissension would be seen without love for country or family.

♡ 🌹 Our Lady of La Salette (French: Notre-Dame de La Salette) is a Marian apparition reported by two French children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, to have occurred at La Salette-Fallavaux, France, in 1846.

On Saturday, September 19, 1846, around 3 p.m., two young shepherds, Mélanie Mathieu (or Mélanie Calvat), aged just under fifteen, and Maximin Giraud (sometimes called Mémin, and, by mistake, Germain), eleven years old,[4] guarded their herds on a mountain near the village of La Salette-Fallavaux (department of Isère). On the evening, they said to their masters that they had seen a lady in tears who had spoken to them. Widow Pra (also known as widow Caron), mistress of Mélanie, thought that they had seen the Blessed Virgin and the children were urged to tell the priest of La Salette everything. They did it the next day, Sunday morning. The priest wept with emotion, took notes and, again in tears, described what had been told to him, in his sermon.

Remember, dear Lady of La Salette, true Mother of Sorrows, the tears which thou didst shed for me on Calvary; be mindful also of the unceasing care which thou dost exercise to shield me from the justice of God; and consider whether thou canst now abandon thy child, for whom thou hast done so much. Inspired by this consoling thought, I come to cast myself at thy feet, in spite of my infidelity and ingratitude. Reject not my prayer, O Virgin of reconciliation, convert me, obtain for me the grace to love Jesus Christ above all things and to console thee too by living a holy life, in order that one day I may be able to see thee in Heaven. Epiphany ఒక క్రైస్తవభావన. క్రీస్తుపుట్టిన పన్నెండో రోజు సాయంకాలం ముగ్గురు తూర్పుదేశపు జ్ఞానులు ఆయన్ని చూడటానికి వచ్చినప్పుడు ఆయన లోకానికి వెలుగుకాబోతున్నాడనే దివ్యానుభూతికి లోనయ్యారు. క్రీస్తు జీవితానికి సంబంధించి అటువంటి క్షణాలు మరి రెండున్నాయి. ఒకటి ఆయన చిన్నప్పుడు, ‘కానా’లో ఒక పెండ్లి విందులో నీళ్ళను ద్రాక్షసారాయిగా మార్చిన క్షణం, మరొకటి ఆయనకు యోహాను బాప్తిస్మమిచ్చినప్పుడు. ఈ మూడు క్షణాల్లోనూ క్రీస్తు ద్వారా ఒక వెలుగు చూపరులకు ప్రత్యక్షమయింది. దాదాపు ఇటువంటి అలౌకికానుభూతి కథలు చదువుతున్నపుడు పాఠకుడికి కలుగుతుందని జాయిస్ అన్నాడు. Epiphany, రసానుభూతి ఒకటి కావు. వాటిమధ్య సున్నితమైన విభజన రేఖ ఉంది. మనం ఒక కథ వింటున్నప్పుడు లేదా ప్రదర్శన చూస్తున్నప్పుడు మనకొక రసస్ఫూర్తి మొదలై అదొక క్షణాన రసానుభూతిని మేల్కొల్పుతుంది. ఆ అనుభూతి కలిగిన మరుక్షణం మనకొక సాక్షాత్కారం సంభవిస్తుందని చెప్పవచ్చు. లేదా రసస్ఫూర్తి ఏదో ఒక క్షణాన మనకొక సాక్షాత్కారాన్ని కలిగిస్తుందనీ, ఆ క్షణమే మనమొక రసానుభూతికి లోనవుతామనీ కూడా చెప్పవచ్చు. ఎండుకట్టెలో నిప్పు రగిలే క్షణమది. ఏది ముందు ఏది వెనక అని చెప్పలేము. 9. ఓ జ్ఞానులు , మీరు ఏమి చేస్తున్నారు? నీచమైన చిందరవందరగా చుట్టి, దౌర్భాగ్యమైన పొట్టులో ఉన్న పసిబాలుడున్ని ఆరాధిస్తారా? ఈ పిల్లవాడు నిజంగా దేవుడు కాగలడా? … వివేకవంతులారా, మీరు మూర్ఖులు అవుతారా… అవును, ఈ జ్ఞానులు తెలివిగలవ మూర్ఖులు, క్రీస్తు కోసం మూర్ఖులు అయ్యారు. – క్లైర్వాక్స్ సెయింట్ బెర్నార్డ్ గారు .. 2. ఈ రోజు జ్ఞానులు లోతైన ఆనదంతో చూస్తున్నారు: భూమిపై స్వర్గం, స్వర్గంలో భూమి, దేవుడిలో మనిషి, మనిషిలో దేవుడు, విశ్వం మొత్తం కలిగి ఉన్న చిన్న శరీరంలో దైవాణ్ని వారు చూస్తున్నప్పుడు, వారు నమ్మి, ఆరాదీoచారు. వారి సంకేత బహుమతులు సాక్ష్యమిస్తాయి: దేవునికి ధూపం, రాజుకు బంగారం, మరణించే వారికి పరిమళ ద్రవయమ్ సమర్పించారు .

THE MAGI

Who were the Magi? They were the first Gentiles to believe in Christ, and were guided by a mysterious star which led them from the East to the village of Bethlehem, where they found the Infant Jesus.

They are called "sages" or "wise men" in the New Testament, but the idea that they were kings first appears in Christian tradition in the writings of Tertullian, who called them "fere regis," or "almost kings." This became generally accepted by the sixth century, because of the implication of Psalm 72, which speaks of the kings of Tarshish, Arabia, and Saba, "who shall bring presents." The New Testament says nothing of how many there were, although the traditional number of three was first ascribed by Origen, based upon the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their names (Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar) are first mentioned in the sixth century, and are also included in the writings of the Venerable Bede. In the Middle Ages the Magi were venerated as saints, and there are relics enshrined in the cathedral in Cologne.

But what do the Magi teach us? Surely, the overwhelming lesson is the absolute importance of complete and utter adoration. These three had traveled great distances and risked both physical danger and the wrath of Herod himself just to kneel before the Incarnate Word of God. All we need to do is to go to the nearest Catholic Church, where the same Christ waits for us in the tabernacle. O come, let us adore Him: Christ the Lord!

The letters C, M, B have two meanings:

• They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar.

• They also abbreviate the Latin words:
Christus mansionem benedicat,
“May Christ bless the house.”

• The “+” represent the cross and 2024 is the year.

All make the Sign of the Cross.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? GOD WITH US

God came when He was not expected. He was born where there was no room for Him. Before He was invited, He came in the most humble of ways. Before we called on Him, He called on us. Before we let Him into our hearts, God took us into His own heart, and gave us His Child.

This little One, whose birth we celebrate at this time, is the Saviour born for us, to save us from our sins, to deliver us from eternal death, to redeem us from the Law and the wrath of God. We deserve hell, yet God brings down heaven. We deserve fire and brimstone, yet God sends a baby.

“Do not be afraid,” says the angel. We look on this Child's face and see the face of God come down to save us. This Child would grow up. He would open the eyes of the blind man. He would open the ears of the deaf. He would cast out devils. He would still the storm and raise the dead. He would hang on a cross and die. See the lengths to which God will go to rescue us! He divests Himself of His glory. He removes His royal robes and exchanges them for diapers. He hides His power and His majesty under the weakness of an Infant in the manger, the Man on the cross.

But we should not be deceived by such weakness. This is the Christ, God's anointed One, His Messiah, the hand of God reaching down to us. He is the Lord, God wearing our flesh, come to be with us as God had never been with us before.

The shepherds heard the preaching of the angel. They heard the words of the angel's birth announcement and left their work and ran to Bethlehem worship at the manger.

We cannot turn back the years and go to Bethlehem as it was that night. But Bethlehem can, and does, come to us. The Church is our Lord's grotto, the place where He makes His dwelling in a world that has no place for Him. The Altar is His manger. The One who once slept in a manger, who hung on a cross, who rose from the dead, and sits at the Father's right hand from whence He came and will come again, comes to us under the outward forms of bread and wine. In Holy Communion we find Him, wrapped in the swaddling cloths of humility. And so every Mass where Jesus is proclaimed Saviour, Christ, and Lord, is Christmas - Christ's Mass.
