Siblings of Bethel,

This week is “The Holy Trinity” Sunday. It is a day that we intentionally reflect on the holy mystery of One in Three and Three in One. It is amazing how much effort we put into trying to explain a mystery!
We are also celebrating the confirmation of 5 of our youths this Sunday also. As a requirement to getting confirmed, they have each written out their own “Faith Statements.” In them, they each attempt to explain what they know and believe about the Holy Trinity…and what difference that belief means to them! The sermon will be a “collection” of their accumulated wisdom and each of their individual Faith Statements are available to be seen and read. I encourage you to join us this Sunday!
See you in Church!

Siblings of Bethel,

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. It is a day when the color for the church is red. The Paraments are red, my stole is red, and we encourage you all to wear red too. The liturgical color of red represents the fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of the martyrs, that is, those who have lost their lives for refusing to turn from their faith.
Our online resource, Sunday and Seasons, explains it in this way:
Pentecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God’s presence within and among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame, bringing God’s presence to all people. Paul reminds us that though we each have different capacities, we are unified in the Spirit that equips us with these gifts. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples, empowering them to forgive sin. We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim God’s redeeming love to all the world.

Questions to ponder this week:

1. How do we celebrate that we have been given the “breath of the Holy Spirit?”
a. What difference does the “breath of the Holy Spirit” make in our lives?
2. How…and where…are you “proclaiming God’s redeeming love to all the world?”

See you in church!

Siblings of Bethel,

This week’s gospel lesson, John 17:1-11, is part of what is called, “Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer.” In it, Jesus is praying in verses 9-10, “ 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified in them.” I have also heard this portion of Jesus’ prayer being referred to as “The Unity Prayer.”
I know that we always feel like what we are experiencing now is the “worst” ever… or the “best” ever… or the “biggest” ever. I think about the weather patterns we get…the “100 year flood”, etc. Are the things that we are currently experiencing really such extreme differences?
I have heard so many people talk about how divided we are as a country and especially in the world of politics. Over the last 15 years (or more) we have experienced the loss of family and friends over political differences. We have felt the pain of Christian communities falling apart and dividing. We have witnessed such a vast chasm develop between the rich 1% and the rest of the word. Are we worse than ever?
When Jesus prays for us to “be one, as we are one,” (referring to Jesus’ relationship with God the Father.) I wonder if that was a big stretch for people to see themselves as one? Do we see ourselves as one today? What do you think Jesus would want us to do in our current world? Is praying for unity enough for us?
See you in Church!
