Happy Feast Day, Saint Madeleine Sophie!

“Be humble, be simple and bring joy to others.” — St. Madeleine Sophie Barat

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in France in 1800. Sophie's aim was to reveal the heart of Jesus in everything she did and her mission was carried out through education. Her vision and wisdom led her to establish Sacred Heart schools in North America by sending St. Philippine Duchesne to begin our school in St. Charles in 1818. From here, Sacred Heart schools grew to South America, Asia and Africa and now number more than 150 schools in 41 countries.

Let us pray the prayer that Sophie prayed daily:

Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Give me a heart that is one with your own;
A humble heart that knows and lives its nothingness;
A gentle heart that holds and calms its own anxiety;
A loving heart that has compassion for the suffering of others;
A pure heart that recoils even at the appearance of evil;
A detached heart that longs for nothing other than the goodness of heaven;
A heart detached from self-love and embraced by the love of God,
Its attention focused on God, Its goodness its only treasure in time and in eternity.

April 18, 2026 marks the 75th Anniversary of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne. The groundbreaking symbolized a growing devotion to Philippine Duchesne, recognition of her impact on Catholic education, and a commitment to preserving the place where she lived and served. The first phase of the Shrine was completed in 1952.

From the Archives: In November 1951, Bishop Fulton Sheen visited the Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne.

Today the Archdiocese of St. Louis and St. Louis Review shared:

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will be beatified on Sept. 24 in St. Louis, the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints announced March 25.

The beatification Mass will take place at 2 p.m. at The Dome at America’s Center. Cardinal Luis Tagle, pro-prefect for the Dicastery for Evangelization, will preside.

Archbishop Sheen, remembered as an influential and innovative evangelist who spread the Gospel through radio, print and television, is a native of El Paso, Illinois. The St. Louis venue for his beatification was chosen because of the large number of people expected to attend and “availability, being indoors and the close proximity to the Diocese of Peoria,” Peoria Bishop Louis Tylka said in a March 25 statement.

“This is a moment of immense grace for the Church — especially for us in the Diocese of Peoria, where Archbishop Sheen was born, ordained and first served as a priest,” Bishop Tylka said. “His life and ministry continue to inspire countless people to know and love Jesus Christ more deeply. Through his preaching, teaching and personal witness, he brought the light of faith to millions, calling each of us to a deeper devotion to the Eucharist and to Our Blessed Mother.

The Shrine of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is a designated pilgrimage site for the St. Louis Archdiocese's 2026 Jubilee Year. The Shrine will be open for personal prayer Sundays and weekdays 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Tours of the Shrine and historic spaces are by appointment.
