Now there will be no more frost!

"Bald wird's bunt" - Things are about to get colourful according to a Bauernregel, an old folk saying. The 15th of May and Kalte Sophie, Sophia von Rom the Last of the Eisheiligen, are history, so we can begin planting out summer flowers and seedlings at last because:

"Vor Nachtfrost du nicht sicher bist, bis Sophie vorรผber ist."

"You canโ€™t be sure there wonโ€™t be a night frost until Sophie has passed."

Eisheiligen, Ice Saints, began on the 11th with St. Mamertus, Pankratius was on Tuesday 12, Servatius Wednesday the 13th, Bonifatius Thursday 14... and Kalte Sophie brought it to an end.

And now Blumenkasten, flower box, displays will begin to appear in this part of the world.

May's cold days are named after the feast days of five "weather saints", all of whom were martyrs or bishops in the 4th or 5th century.

Sophia, a Martyr, is the only female Ice Saint, and is joined by:

11 May: Mamertus (Bishop of Vienne in Gaul)
12 May: Pancras (Martyr)
13 May: Servatius/Servaz (Bishop of Tongeren, an ancient bishopric of Belgium)
14 May: Boniface (Martyr)
