THURSDAY

The day before Jesus would die.

The precious Messiah bends down to wash His disciple's feet then takes the bread and the cup of Passover with the men in the upper room... knowing, full well, He would soon be their perfect Lamb.

The Lamb.

The Perfect Lamb... soon it would be His blood spilling out for all of us.

Huddled in those last moments together, Jesus tells the disciples that one of them would soon betray him; and they each ask, "Is it I?".

Judas slips away to sell the Messiah for 30 pieces of silver.

It was night.

Jesus tells those who remain that He would soon depart; and where He is going, they cannot come. He gives them the new commandment to, "love one another as I have loved you."

Peter insists he would "lay down his life" for Jesus. Yet, Jesus knows it will be He who will soon lay down His life for all and tells Peter he would, "deny Him three times before the rooster crows".

Jesus then reassures them, "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." and tells them He is going to prepare a place for them.

Surely, they were all confused. Where was He going? Why couldn't they come? Yet, only Thomas, speaks up to say, "Lord, we do not know where you are going."

Jesus then gives them the answer...
..powerful words for them,
..life and death words for us all,
.. the weight-of-eternity words for EACH of us to ponder.

Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

It wasn't merely where Jesus was going that prevented them from coming.

Without the washing of His blood...

only HIS BLOOD...
the BLOOD OF THE PERFECT LAMB...

without THAT,
they were dead men walking...

We are ALL dead men walking... dead in our sin, unable to be near a perfect God in Heaven.

Jesus came to be our way...to die so we might live.

The ONLY way.

Jesus then goes to the garden to pray, praying with such intensity, He cries tears of blood.

BLOOD.

He pleads with the Father... if there be any other way... any other way....

But for the ONLY time since time began...God, the Father, does not answer His Son.

Because there is NO OTHER WAY!

And there, in the Garden of Gethsemane, the horrific separation begins...the Father is silent... and this, far more than the beatings, the jeering and the piercing nails, prompted the Son to ask, "If there be ANY OTHER WAY."

But there is NO other way.

And so, Jesus, who could have walked away, walks toward the Cross.

Alone.
The Only Way.

And if there were any other way... then God would be cruel.

But there is NO OTHER WAY.

The riches of Father’s love for us is far greater than we can fathom.

God sent His Son to die for us when we were "His enemies".

We weren't just lost, or confused, or mistaken. We were the enemies of the Holy God (Rom 5:10).

And enemies can't ever try hard enough, to be good enough, to earn what the Messiah would do.

Absurd, really, to think our good works could satisfy the wrath of a Holy God.

No, the Perfect Lamb would willingly walk to the Cross to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.

The Father turns His face away.

The Savior is alone.

The Perfect Lamb.

The only WAY...

He came to make our way.

Jesus, who could have walked away, willingly walks toward the Cross....the only way.

I thought this was perfect timing with our Sunday School lesson from yesterday about the Good Samaritan. Do you have an enemy or someone who has hurt you that you can start praying for?

I wonder, have you ever comforted yourself by wishing harm on someone who has harmed you?

You know, have you ever lay in bed plotting how you’d get them back?

In Genesis 27, Esau is enraged over the deception involving the blessing and birthright, and Rebekah tells Jacob, “Surely your brother comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.” (Gen 27:42)

And I wonder, have you ever comforted yourself by wishing real harm on someone who has harmed you? Well maybe not. But how about wishing harm on someone who has harmed your children, dear momma bear?

Well, if I’m honest, I have. And the truth is, there is really no comfort in that but only bitterness and knot-in-your stomach stress.

But the times I’ve prayed for my enemies and prayed with my children for those who have mistreated and hurt them, there has been legit peace and real relief.

This is certainly countercultural in our world.

But, let me ask you, how will a “people walking in darkness” see the great light inside of us if we look just like the dark world?

Our response has to be different in our day-to-day interactions with others.

If we believe the Bible to be the true words and instruction from the God of the Universe, whom we say we call Lord, then it should be evidenced in how we live.

We should routinely hold the mirror of truth up against our own noses and ask ourselves if we are truly living so others see something different in us.

We should look at the Word, like passages below, and prayerfully ask ourselves, is this me?

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord. On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. “ (Rom 12:17-21)

And as we follow the Lord, instead of our flesh that so often gets us in trouble, we will find peace.

And others….they may just see our Savior…in us.

This.

No matter what we go through as Christians, we are never alone because Jesus is always with us.

Jesus knew how He was going to die.
He knew how horrendous it would be.

That part really gets me.

We see Jesus in Gethsemane just hours before He gets arrested, praying to the Father and experiencing something many of us can relate to.. agony and sorrow.

He says to His disciples, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” -Matthew 26:38

Unfortunately, His disciples couldn’t even stay awake to keep watch.

I can only imagine the feeling of grief in that lonely hour.

Multiple times, Jesus prays: “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” -Matthew 26:39

These verses make me want to cry my eyes out.

Jesus didn’t want that “cup”. He knows exactly what He will be walking through, and He doesn’t want the unbearable pain that is about to take place.

Yet, He always goes back to God’s will. Even if it’s brutal, He will choose to follow through.

All I can think about is how many of us don’t want this “cup” we have, either.

We don’t want the fear, the illness, the loss, the loneliness.

You might think the point of this is to say that we just need to accept our circumstances and go through with it.

That’s not exactly the point.

What I was reminded of was that Jesus accepted His “cup” (death and taking on our sin) so that we would never have to experience our “cup” without Him.

What I mean is, Jesus had to experience true separation from the Father so that we wouldn’t ever have to.

He took on our sin and endured the separation you and I deserved.

Our “cup” will still come. We will still experience the full range of human emotion and suffering.

But never alone.
Never like He did.

Jesus shows us here that it’s okay to feel and grieve. But He also reminds us we never have to do it alone now.

So that cup you have? That thing that you really don’t want to experience?

Know that you aren’t the only one holding on to it.

He took it on Himself long ago.

He’s with you, and He will never leave you.

I hope everyone reads this important message. We never know when our last chance will be to accept Jesus or to tell someone about Jesus.

The past few days, I’ve written a lot about asking God to help us identify sin, flee from it and rejoice in His forgiveness.

But the vast majority of those around us rarely give this a thought.

So many, who hold on to this world, think they have many, many chances left to think about eternity and Jesus.

Surely Felix did. (Acts 24).

Felix had been a slave, set free by the Emperor Claudius and went on to gain political status to govern Judea from A.D. 52 to 60.

The writer Tacitus (a Roman historian) describes Felix as “exercising the powers of a king with the character of a slave.”

He was known as indulging in all kinds of lustful, immoral behaviors.

But Felix also had “a rather accurate knowledge of the Way” (Acts 24:22) and was curious about the Apostle Paul who had landed in his custody.

Felix and his wife, Drusilla (the great-granddaughter of Herod the Great, who had ordered the killing of the Jewish babies in an attempt to kill Jesus) sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Jesus.

Paul talked about righteousness, and self-control, and the coming judgment (Acts 24:25); and Felix was alarmed.

But Felix was also intrigued as he continued to send for Paul often over the two years Paul was imprisoned there under his control.

He sat with one of the world’s greatest, most anointed preachers of all time, the Apostle Paul, for TWO years!

Yet, there is no record in the Bible, or in historical writings, of Felix ever coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

What held Felix back?
Pride? Lust? Control?

Funny how we can be intrigued by Jesus, and understand many things about Christianity, and still cling to the empty, destructive things of this world.

Then verse 27...
Festus abruptly replaces Felix.

The days of long conversations with Paul were over and very likely so was Felix’s chance to turn to Christ.

Like Felix, none of us know when verse 27 is going to come in our lives either.

So many, who hold on to this world, think they have many, many chances left to think about eternity and Jesus.

Many want to live “their lives” and ignore the fact that one day this life will end.

Like Felix, we don’t know when our last chance to receive the gospel will come.

And Christian, nor do we know when our last chance to tell someone else of it will come either.

We don’t know when that coworker will be laid off, when that neighbor will move, or when death will come for those we love.

We have to stop being so distracted with this temporary world ourselves and be intentional tellers of the faith!

And you know this next week is an easy time to tell, to bring up the discussion about Jesus as we celebrate Easter. It’s certainly one of the easiest times to invite someone to church.

And I know, talking about Christianity isn’t as easy as it used to be. But do it anyways, and though we probably won’t be thrown in prison like Paul, we may suffer in this upside-down, politically-correct world.

“But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” (1 Pet 3:14-15)

May God give us the courage to tell others of Him! May we never assume we, nor they, have infinite chances for these, most important of conversations, to occur.

Prayer—God, help us see the opportunities around us to tell others about You. Help us be prepared to give an answer for the true hope we have because of You. Help us live these short lives so others will want what we have. And God help us tell them with gentleness and respect and give glory to You. Amen

Yesterday, I wrote briefly about how sometimes our hearts, and the enemy, condemn us for things God has already forgiven but that God is greater than our hearts (from 1 John 3:20).

The evil one is masterful at deceiving even God’s children into believing God can’t possibly forgive them and that they will always be defined by what they have done in the past.

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard others say…

I can’t be used by God because _________
I know they will think I am crazy if I tell them I did _______
I can’t serve at church… don’t you know I used to _______
I can’t ask for help because____________
I can’t have any joy because I did _______________
I can’t teach my kids about Jesus they know I _______________

It is hard to live like the redeemed when you keep forgetting you are redeemed!

The Bible really does say, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Cor 5:17).

But the enemy doesn’t want you to believe that… and he certainly doesn’t want you to live like you do!

In Revelation 12:10, Satan is called the “accuser of the brothers”. Do you know that Satan in Hebrew means “accuser”?

Pay attention to the accusations you hear about yourself. They are often an assault against you meant to keep you from doing all God wants to do through you and keep you from living free from guilt and shame.

The accuser wants to rob us of all joy, peace, and contentment. He is the one who reminds us of sin God has already forgiven because he wants us to believe the blood of Jesus is not enough to remove THAT sin and shame from our lives.

What a liar.

I know he is a liar because he has lied to me. Just like every other subject God has ever allowed me to write or speak about… He has had me personally experience this. Can I just tell you I have been on the field trip of believing Satan’s lies, and it is no place to stay?

Maybe you aren’t like me. Maybe you don’t have any big regrets. However, I do. I cannot tell you how many hours I have laid awake at night with an ache in my stomach over something I have done or said.

Anybody else?

What about those things which have so horrifically hurt someone else and have consequences we cannot fix? How can we live with shame and regret so deep that we dare not tell anyone about it? What about those sins that everyone knows about? What about when asking for forgiveness from the one we have hurt is not even possible? What then? How can we be free from that choking, heavy burden and live life abundantly? Is it possible?

It is possible but only in the light of the Cross.

Psalm 103:11-12
“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

“As far as the east is from the west” – I have read those words yet how I have struggled to apply them to my own life. Why does it seem so easy to tell others that God has forgiven them and sometimes so hard to accept it ourselves?

For many years in the past, I spoke and gave my testimony and had people coming up to me telling me how it encouraged them. I would then get in my car and want to throw up because my mind would remember my sins of the past. I knew those women in the audience didn’t really know everything about me; and I knew (back then) they certainly didn’t know that I had told my best friend, my sweet, tall, dark and handsome, turned pitiful, drug-addicted husband that I hated him only a few days before he committed su***de.

For years, I had told no one. For years, I had pleaded with God that Rick remembered my words of love the last morning that I saw him and not my stinging horrible words the night before. Many times, I drove to his grave and watered the grass with my tears. I could not take those words back. I prayed to God to somehow tell Rick that I am so sorry, and I prayed that God would forgive me. Yet, for years I did not accept God’s forgiveness and the awful scene played over and over in my head like a horror movie.

Yet, one day the Holy Spirit helped me realize that it was not God who wants to remind me of those hurtful words – it was the enemy who wants to drown me in shame and make me feel unworthy to tell others about my story of God’s goodness in my life.

This I know --without God, I am nothing but a heap of tears and regrets, but because of the Cross I am forgiven.

Completely, forever forgiven!

As I daily follow God and seek out His truth, I can fend off the lies of enemy and keep on walking in freedom. I am not perfect, and I never will be, but because of Jesus my sins (the old ones and the new ones) are removed as far as the east is from the west (Psalms 103:12).

Daily I seek to live my life as He would have me live it – not because I could ever be good enough but because He is the one who knows all the answers, makes no mistakes and perfectly loves the sinner that I am. He did it all. His blood is enough. He is my everything. AND He is my freedom over sin, guilt and regret.

Those truths that are true for me are true for you too!

You have not out-sinned God’s ability to forgive you, and shame is never a place our Father wants you to live.

If there is someone who needs to hear your apology--go to them. However, if that is no longer possible tell your Father and accept the forgiveness He offers. Remember, God’s forgiveness is complete and forever, and He does not bring it back up and remind you of it. (That is the voice of the enemy, the accuser, (not God!)

And by all means, don’t allow the enemy to hold you down and keep you from serving God! Don’t give the enemy the joy of that! Instead, be eternally grateful for the grace that you have received and be deliberate to praise your Father on every remembrance of it… and serve Him!

And consider this…though you may have been knocked down by the enemy, though you may have cooperated with him in sin, like Peter, when you get up (get up!!), strengthen your brothers!! (Luke 22:31-32).

Remember, none of us are perfect. That’s why we need a Savior! In the words of Martin Luther, “We are all mere beggars showing other beggars where to find bread”.

So, let’s go show them!

As we discussed yesterday in Sunday School, we need to plant our feet in the Truth. The Truth is The World of God, the Bible. Here is a great morning devoted for you to read. Keep reading, studying, and learning God’s Word.

This world is full of temptation, trial, and false teachers. It’s easy to get discouraged, distracted and tired. This is exactly why we need God’s Word every day.

For sometime now, I’ve been drawn to the book of First John.

John. The beloved disciple. The son of Zebedee who, with his brother James, were called “The Sons of Thunder” by Jesus.

Can you imagine having a nickname given to you by God in flesh?!

Oh, to have seen what John’s eyes saw, to hear what his ears heard, to touch what his hands touched! ( 1 John 1:1).

John was an eyewitness to the miracles and ministry of Jesus Christ. The words he wrote are God-inspired truth, encouragement, and warning meant not just tor the early church but for our attention in this day and age.

John’s faith was a tested one. As he pens his letter, he had seen his friend, his Savior crucified. Peter and Paul had been executed, Jerusalem was destroyed, and the early church scattered.

Can you imagine the confusion and fear that surely assaulted John’s very human mind?

Yet, John found courage, comfort and direction as he remembered what he had seen, and heard, and touched; and with certainty, he wrote his letter to encourage others to hold on to these truths, because it is there, that joy may be full (I John 1:4)

It is the remembering, in the daily remembering of truth, that we find help to walk in the light where real joy is found—no matter how dark the world around us gets.

And the world around us feels pretty dark right now, doesn’t it? Temptation, trial and false teachers, as John warns us, abound. For this reason, let’s deliberately plant our feet in truth of the Word every day where hope is found.

Let’s read First John!

I hope you’ll open your Bible and read 1st John chapter one.

Note - this is the beginning of my study of 1 John. I hope you’ll join in. I love to hear your insight. You can follow this page to see future posts or sign up for a daily email at kimjaggers.com

Spiritual attacks are not a sign of failure but a confirmation that you’re advancing God’s Kingdom. The enemy targets what threatens him most—your obedience and faithfulness to God’s call.

Hold on to His promises, knowing that He is faithful to complete the good work He began in you (Philippians 1:6).

Stay rooted in His Word,
keep praying,
& trust that every trial is refining you for an even greater purpose.

God is with you in every step, fighting your battles and strengthening you for the journey ahead.

The enemy attacks because he sees the impact of your obedience to God. If you feel under spiritual attack, remember this truth >>> opposition is often confirmation that you are walking in your purpose.

When fiery darts come your way, remember that God’s plans for your life cannot be altered.

The battle belongs to Him, and He has already declared the victory. (Praise the Lord!!) Every trial is an opportunity for God’s strength to shine in your weakness.

Stay faithful and keep moving forward—your obedience is making an eternal impact.

The battle belongs to the Lord, and you are not fighting alone. (I repeat: you’re not alone in this) Remember—every fiery dart is an opportunity for God to display His power in your life.

The enemy may attack, but he cannot prevail against the plans of God! Stand firm, pray fervently, and trust God to lead you to victory.

In His victory,
Servant Hearted Sisterhood 💛
