Sermon Highlight- June 14th- "Closer than a Brother"
Good morning Church Family: Sunday's sermon summary today is for anyone who might have asked,"What was the main point again?" before reaching the parking lot. Pastor Spencer's message revolved around the theme of friendship with God, and he emphasized that love is the fundamental command and the core of a rich spiritual life. The message discussed the importance of allowing God to influence our lives, having faith in His guidance and believing that friendship with Jesus does not depend on bargaining or benefits. Incorporating the theme from last Sunday, Spencer reiterated that wisdom and faith grow by introducing spiritual practices into our daily lives. Friendship with Jesus is a reciprocal relationship, and believers are expected to act on His teachings, and the wonderful news is that God's grace and love are available to all---non-believers as well as believers. The message also stressed that our relationships with others also influences our spiritual journey. We need to use discernment in choosing our relationships. James, the brother of Jesus, said "faith without works is not faith" meaning we need to demonstrate our faith and love by being open to being used as an instrument of God's will. Friendship with God is built on mutual love, and by loving those God puts before us we are showing we love God. In closing Spencer pointed out that Jesus showed us that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for a friend, and He did that for us, and the question now is whether we are a friend to Him.
