We see a tragic event in the book of Acts today. The death of Stephen resulted in so much more than sad friends from within a movement. The act of violence that stole his life emboldened those who would persecute the early Jesus followers, and became much more aggressive in their tactics. This difficulty sent many away from Jerusalem, either to return home or just to escape being a target. The result is God used this tragedy to spread the good news of Jesus to places it had not been taken before. That news and the growth of the Church into all the world was shared because of those who left Jerusalem after Stephen’s murder. Acts 7:54-8:8 will help guide our hearts in worship today. As we continue in our series Acting Up: The Book of Acts for Today, we see one of the first indications that this deeply Spirit-led movement of the early church was not perfect. When confronted with the injustice of their actions the Church responds humbly, keeps appropriate boundaries, and lifts up new people for ministry. We see many amazing actions in the book of Acts from the earlier leaders and believers in Jesus. We can certainly see the power of the Holy Spirit encouraging them to act up in the ways that they do, but what about their attitudes and what’s happening in their hearts? Well, that’s pretty amazing too. We see in Acts 5:17-42 that as the heat starts getting turned up on Jesus followers persecution becomes a reality of life for the early Christians. What is amazing is how they don’t complain or shrink back because of this, but that they rejoice that they can follow in the footsteps of Jesus even in the face of suffering. Let’s see what God has for us as we look back to see how we can live more faith-filled today. See you at 10:15!

Last week we saw the power of healing continue from Jesus’ ministry into the early church. That faithful work that Peter and John did, along with the number of Christians continuing to grow into the thousands, was becoming a problem for the religious leaders of Jerusalem. As we continue our current worship series, Acting Up: The Book of Acts for today, we look at how the Holy Spirit gave them the power to stand up when pressured and the courage to keep on going when told not to. In the early Church we see some incredible works of healing. This continues the power of Jesus’ ministry and gets people’s attention to what God is up to. As we consider what the Holy Spirit is doing in the book of Acts we ask how is the work of healing the same or different in the Church today. We start a new program year at the church, which among other things, means that weekly Christian formation experiences are starting up for all age groups. Prior to worship today we will join for breakfast at 9:00 and share fellowship and meal together. We are also starting a new series in worship today, Acting Up: The Book of Acts for Today. Acts 2:42-47 will help us center our hearts in worship as we see what the early church models for us in coming together as Christians. See you at 10:15!

Prayerfully remembering today.

In remembrance of September 11, 2001:

O God, our hope and refuge,
in our distress we come quickly to you...

We come remembering those who lost their lives
in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania...

We come remembering
and we come in hope,
not in ourselves, but in you...

In commemorating this tragedy,
we give you thanks for your presence
in our time of need
and we seek to worship you in Spirit and in truth,
our guide and our guardian. Amen.

As challenging as it can be to do the right things or come to the beliefs that seem to be able to guide your life in a good direction at a particular time, it is something else to continue on the right path again and again. To continue in faithfulness over the long haul is difficult as the situations we face in life seem to throw us curve balls in various seasons. Jesus’ heart for us is that we would following after him for a lifetime. He gifts believers with the Holy Spirit to work within us to help us continue in faithfulness. Deuteronomy 6:4-9
