Sin is rebellion against God's authority

Actions reveal what we truly believe

God's children will reflect their Father's nature

When you belong to a family, there are often things about you that reveal where you come from, a resemblance in your appearance, your mannerisms, or even the way you talk. In the same way, being a child of God should produce a noticeable resemblance in the way we live. Becoming a Christian isn't simply about changing what we believe; it is about being changed from the inside out so that our lives increasingly reflect Christ's. None of us will live perfectly, but there should be a growing difference between the life we once lived and the life Christ is producing in us. The question isn't whether we will ever stumble, but whether our lives are characterized by a pattern of righteousness or a settled pattern of sin.

In 1 John 3:4–10, John draws a sharp distinction between the children of God and the children of the devil, explaining that those who abide in Christ cannot make a practice of sin, while those who practice righteousness and love their brothers and sisters demonstrate that they belong to God. The evidence of our spiritual family is ultimately seen in the resemblance our lives bear to the One we call our Father.

We live in a world that constantly encourages us to prepare for what comes next........retirement, emergencies, opportunities, and the future, but how often do we stop to ask whether we are spiritually ready for the day we will stand before Christ? Being ready for His return isn't about predicting when He will come, but about faithfully living for Him while we wait. The way we live today reveals what we are expecting tomorrow, and abiding in Christ means that our relationship with Him is not something we pick up only when we need Him. When Christ is truly our hope, that hope changes the way we live, the choices we make, and the person we are becoming.

In 1 John 2:28–3:3, John calls believers to abide in Christ so that they can have confidence rather than shame when He appears, reminds us that we are already children of God, and points us toward the day when we will be made fully like Christ, showing us that those who genuinely hope in Him don't simply wait for His return, they live ready for it.

We live in a world where deception is everywhere, and not everything that looks genuine is actually what it claims to be. Just as counterfeit money can look remarkably similar to the real thing, false teaching can sometimes sound convincing while quietly leading people away from the truth of Christ. That is why knowing what is true matters, because our faith cannot rest on feelings, popular opinions, or what happens to be accepted by the culture around us. We need to know the truth so well that we can recognize what is false when it comes our way.

In 1 John 2:18–27, John warns believers about false teachers and the spirit of antichrist that seeks to deceive them, but he reminds them that they have received the truth from Christ and the Holy Spirit who helps them recognize deception. In a time when counterfeit faith can look remarkably genuine, John calls us to remain faithful to the truth we have heard, abide in Christ, and make sure our faith is genuine rather than merely something that looks Christian on the outside.

Every day, our hearts are pulled in different directions by the things this world promises will satisfy us. Success, possessions, pleasure, and acceptance can quietly become the objects of our greatest affection if we're not careful. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying God's blessings, there is great danger in allowing the temporary things of this world to take the place that belongs to God alone. What captures our love will ultimately shape our decisions, priorities, and eternal perspective. As followers of Christ, we are called to live for what lasts rather than what is passing away.

In 1 John 2:12–17, John encourages believers by reminding them of the forgiveness, strength, and assurance they have in Christ, then warns them not to love the world or its sinful desires because this world is passing away, while those who do the will of God will abide forever.
