I don’t understand these words of Jesus to be a call for all of us to live a monastic life, where every moment, every action, every possession is reserved or forfeited for spiritual pursuits. But there is a deeper, nuanced set of instructions here. What Jesus means is that nothing in our lives is off the table to be used by God to further the Kingdom. We don’t set limits on what we make available to God, whether that’s time, money, skills, etc. God, you can use my hands, but not my voice. My time, but not my money. When those are our red lines, we aren’t actually opening ourselves to what could be—a human being, fully alive. Because when we imitate Jesus’ character and way of life, we embrace God’s fully realized vision for humanity.

We finally got some cool, fall weather and we are excited to enjoy a beautiful evening at Farm tomorrow night! Grab your jacket, bring your own drinks (they will have water), and throw a chair in your car as we feast on pizza and fun from 5-7:30pm. See you there!

In Matthew, the longer sermon spends more time on the spiritual side of life. Jesus describes how to practice faith through prayer, fasting, and piety. In Luke, Jesus exhorts the crowd to put faith into action by reversing cultural norms and reflecting God’s generous spirit to all we encounter. Yes, Jesus is concerned with our inward, spiritual transformation, but the results are manifested through real, practical actions.

We go the extra mile without being asked. We treat our enemies with compassion. We serve and give to the outcast and destitute without regard for reciprocity, recognition, or status. Groundbreaking stuff in the ancient near-East, and it still is today.

How we live matters. How we give matters.

Say a prayer for the youth, the chaperones, and our entire building to make it through the night in one piece! The youth lock-in has begun! 🎉🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️☕️

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT!

But before we begin our descent into sleep-deprived madness, we must defeat our greatest enemy: HUNGRY KIDS.

A few reminders for tonight:

* EAT DINNER BEFORE YOU ARRIVE! We’ll have plenty of snacks to fuel the madness, but dinner will NOT be provided. Please feed your student before drop-off. Our volunteers’ sanity depends on it.
* BRING A PILLOW & SLEEPING BAG. We’ll have designated sleeping areas for anyone who decides sleep might not be the enemy after all.

Get ready for a night of fun, friends, and questionable decision-making after midnight. We’ll see you tonight at 7:30 PM!

Pickup is Saturday morning at 6:30 AM. Good luck, parents. You’ve got this.
