Struggling with anger in your life? Do you accept anger as who you are? Is it your sin of choice? Well God's Word has much to say about anger. There is Godly anger which is perfectly right as God reacts against sin in the world. There is righteous human anger when we react against those who sin against God and what He values in a righteous way. The reality of life though is that most of us get angry when we don't get what WE want or we GET angry to motivate others to give us what WE want. Our anger generally comes from our desire to please self.

Helpful passages to consider would be Ephesians 4:26-5:2. James 4:1-3, Mathew 5: 21-22, or Proverbs 14:16-17.

I recently read a series of articles worth reading on this subject. They were written in "The Journal of Biblical Counseling. Volume 14. Number 1 and 2. and Volume 16. Number 1 written in 1996 and 1997 by David Powlison. The Titles of the three articles are as follows: "Understanding Anger", "Three Lies About Anger and the Transforming Truth", and "Getting to the Heart of Conflict". All three of these articles would be beneficial if struggling with anger.

For those who may want to read more extensively on the subject, I would suggest two books: the first being "Uprooting Anger" by Robert Jones. I appreciate how he defines anger, "Our anger is our whole- personed active response of negative moral judgment against perceived evil." This book is a must read if you are struggling with anger.

The second book, "Anger: Stress Management God's Way" by Wayne Mack is also very good. This book has many application questions and exercises to help one grow in efforts to overcome anger.

So if you're struggling with anger in your life, I would encourage you to engage your mind in the Scripture and helpful materials suggested and let this knowledge and the power of the Holy Spirit change your life.

Book Recommendation by SCBC Director Mike Wickens
"Feelings and Faith" by Brian S Borgman

Every two months the SCBC Counselors read and discuss a book as a group. This month's book "Feelings and Faith" by Brian S Borgman is a must read for those intersted in getting in touch with their emotions from a biblical perspective. If you are struggling with controlling your emotions, chapter 4 titled "Our Emotions and The Authority of God's Word" and chapter 7 "How to Handle The Emotions Through Truth" could be very helpful. Chapters 8-12 discuss how we can get rid of ungodly emotions like sinful anger, unforgiveness, bitterness, fear, anxiety, worry, and depression. The book goes on to discuss cultivating Godly emotions. I specifically enjoyed chapter 16 which discussed renewing the mind.

I believe this book is worth reading both for those seeking to counsel themselves on a biblical view of emotions and for those who seek to counsel others.

In honor of the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, ACBC published this wonderful article.

Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, in October 1517. He was concerned that the Roman Catholic practice of indulgences undermined Scripture and its teaching on grace and genuine repentance. His act would spark a Reformation that witness...
