There’s something healing about hearing laughter echo through an old sanctuary.

Maybe joy is part of the liturgy too.

We laugh.
And tell stories before worship.
And accidentally get too loud in the sanctuary.

Turns out community is sacred too.

We're getting excited for our 5th Annual Pride Picnic!!! One of our sweetest traditions (see what we did there?😄) is a good old-fashioned baking contest--because nothing says church picnic like homemade cakes, pies, and treats! Come celebrate the diversity of all God's children with us on Saturday, June 13th from 4:00 to 7:00. Love is love, and we'd love to see all y'all there! 🌈

This Memorial Day, we remember the lives lost in war and honor the countless individuals and families forever shaped by sacrifice, service, grief, and survival.

At 5th Ave Uniting Church, history is not something far away from us. It lives in the hand-fired bricks beneath our windows, the worn wood floors that have carried generations, and the stories held within these walls.

This building has stood through war, hardship, healing, division, rebuilding, and community care. It once sheltered soldiers and horses during the Civil War, served as a Union hospital, and became part of the Underground Railroad for those seeking freedom and safety.

Yesterday, we reflected on Pentecost and the reminder that we were never meant to remain closed off from one another. Our kids and families walked through the congregation with red fans bringing in the holy “wind and flames”. Again and again throughout history, people have been called to move toward one another with courage, compassion, sacrifice, and hope.

Today, we remember all those whose lives became part of that story.

And as the voices and footsteps of a new generation now move through these same halls, may we honor that legacy not only in memory, but in the way we walk forward together — caring for one another, welcoming our neighbors, working toward peace, and teaching our children what it means to build a more compassionate world.

If there is someone you would like to honor and remember this Memorial Day, we invite you to share their name in the comments. We will hold their memory with gratitude and lift up a prayer for the loved ones and generations who carry their story forward ❤️

Here’s a few of our favorite people wearing red. ❤️

Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday at 5th Ave Uniting Church, and we can’t wait to celebrate together at 11am. We’ll recognize and bless our teachers as another school year winds down, welcome the movement of the Spirit through story, song, wind, and flame, and spend time gathered in community with people we love.

Our 5th Ave Kids will help to bring in the “wind and flames” as we begin the Pentecost celebration, so don’t forget to wear RED ❤️‍🔥 if you can. We hope you’ll join us.

An evening full of beautiful music, sacred moments, and community. 🎶💙

If you missed our joint choir concert with the incredible choir of Springfield First United Methodist Church — or if you simply want to experience it again — the full concert is now up on our YouTube channel!

From the soaring hymns to the laughter and warmth shared inside our nearly 200-year-old sanctuary, this night was such a beautiful reminder that music still brings people together in powerful ways.

Huge thanks again to Stan Stanley and Jon Gower, and every gifted vocalist and musician who helped make the evening so special.

Grab a warm beverage, settle in, and enjoy a little moment of beauty and community with us. ✨

Last Sunday evening, our sanctuary was filled with music, community, and the spirit of radical welcome as the "Choir on Fire" joined voices with the choir of...

We’ve been busy doing one of the things we do best — celebrating people, and finding God in every single one of them. ✨

Kids outside soaking up the sun, learning, and loving one another. Teens prepping for Pride Picnic. Mother’s Day love. A community choir concert that packed the house. And last Sunday? Our very own graduate, Ava Heusser, stepped into the pulpit, delivered the sermon, AND presided over communion alongside her mom. 🙌 We also wrapped our arms around every single one of the graduates dear to our heart - from high school, college, and everyone in between.

That choir concert had us thinking about something A.W. Tozer wrote in The Pursuit of God —
“Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshipers met together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be.”

A full house, all tuned to the same thing. That felt like 5th Ave. 🎹

And speaking of showing up for people — we also hosted an immigration forum, because that’s what we do. We’re not here to talk about the headlines. We’re here to talk about the people behind them. No politics. Just education, compassion, and asking the hard question: how do we move forward in a way that’s best for everyone? That’s the 5th Ave way. 🕊️

And we’re not done yet! This Sunday is Pentecost (remember to wear red ❤️‍🔥) and Teacher Recognition Sunday! 🍎 Are you a teacher? Let us know so we can celebrate YOU.

This is us. Every day is worth showing up for, but we especially love the ones where we get to stop and say — look at you. look at what you’ve done. look at who you are.

Our kids. Our elders. Our everyday heroes. Our graduates. Our mamas. Our people.

If you’re looking for a place where everybody is a gift and everybody gets celebrated you might just belong here. 💛

Katherine was deeply loved and leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, friendship, and quiet kindness that touched so many lives across generations.

Services will be held today at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with visitation from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM, followed by funeral service then burial at Springfield Memorial Gardens.

We ask you to continue holding the Calvert family close in prayer today and in the days ahead — Susan, our former pastor, Mark Calvert-Rosenberger and most especially Katherine’s husband, Jimmy.

Join us tomorrow night, Thursday, May 14 at 6PM at 5th Avenue Uniting Church in Springfield, Tennessee for an Immigration Forum and Community Conversation.

This gathering will take place in our historic 1839 Room, a space that has held generations of stories, questions, grief, hope, change, and community. And tomorrow night, it holds space once again.

This is not a political rally or debate. It is an opportunity to listen, learn, and hear from organizations and individuals working directly with families and communities impacted by immigration in real and everyday ways.

In a world built on headlines, hot takes, and constant noise, we believe there is still value in sitting together face to face, hearing real stories, asking thoughtful questions, and approaching one another through the lens of compassion and Christ’s love.

Whether you come with questions, curiosity, personal experience, or simply a desire to better understand your neighbors, you are welcome at the table.
