All of God's children are welcome at Central Christian. If you identify as LGBTQ and/or Muslim (or have friends/family who do), do not hesitate to reach out if you feel the need for safe sanctuary. The tomb is dark & silent, but God's work is in it.

Easter Sunday service, 10:55 a.m.

As for today & tonight, let Barbara Brown Taylor guide your thoughts:

"If you are willing to rest in this Sabbath, where you cannot see your hand in front of your face and none of your self-protective labors can do you one bit of good, then you may come as close to the Christ as you will ever get — there in that quiet cave where you wait to see how the Maker of All Life will choose to come to you in the dark."

Tomorrow night, 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary--Maundy Thursday/Tenebrae Service.

"The Last Supper"
Rainer Maria Rilke

They are assembled, astonished and disturbed
round him, who like a sage resolved his fate,
and now leaves those to whom he most belonged,
leaving and passing by them like a stranger.
The loneliness of old comes over him
which helped mature him for his deepest acts;
now will he once again walk through the olive grove,
and those who love him still will flee before his sight.

To this last supper he has summoned them,
and (like a shot that scatters birds from trees)
their hands draw back from reaching for the loaves
upon his word: they fly across to him;
they flutter, frightened, round the supper table
searching for an escape. But he is present
everywhere like an all-pervading twilight-hour.

May your first Thursday in March be filled with Lenten reflection, with good fellowship, and, if the spirit moves you, good food!

Come out at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 03, for Central's next Lenten study. We're basing our conversation on the daily readings from this year's Fellowship of Prayer, authored by Rev. Dr. Sarah Griffith Lund!

Bring a little food to share, but don't worry if you're in a rush and just need to breathe! Just come!

Peace and blessings, We are NOT going to have worship tomorrow morning (Jan 24). A few folks have called and emailed with concerns about the conditions of roads, side streets, and walking paths in the Springfield area, and temperatures don't look like they'll rise enough to help things clear off.

Allyn will hold office hours at the church this Wednesday. Please feel free to contact him if you have any Joys or Concerns you would want held in prayer.

Stay safe and warm!

Remembering Baptism today:

There along the river, standing still, the past, present and future run together. Water in motion. Small, water-washed ancient stones crunchy and sturdy beneath my feet. I wondered, Could the tears of those forcibly removed from this land still be in the streams? Still soaked in the soil? Could a land baptized with tears be redeemed?

I think so. An orthodox theologian reminds us that "the blessing of water [for Baptism] signifies the return or redemption of matter to its initial and essential meaning." In other words, maybe we can think of Baptisms as the point at which our bodies reconnect to the original order of things. Baptism reminds us that God intends for people to be redeemable.

And God's creation is so expansive that sometimes words don't mean as much as the feeling of rock and water on skin. God's voice may descend with a dove; or it may whisper in the woods, babble in the Sulphur Fork Creek, or fall softly in the night like snow on our fields.

How shall we prepare this house so that it signals that the Light of the World has come? By lighting branches of a tree to break open the darkness.

As we prepare for the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World, we light the Christmas tree. During this Advent, wherever you see a lighted Christmas tree, let it call to mind the One who brings light to our darkness, healing to our brokenness, and peace to all who receive Christ.
