Tonight donations from the congregations of Zion Lutheran and First Lutheran were sorted and packed at First Lutheran with the additional help of BrickBase! Together we packed over 30 boxes to help St. Vincent de Paul’s call for aid for the vulnerable in our community, especially our Haitian neighbors.

Springfield Lutherans of the ELCA: First, St. John’s, Zion, Good Shepherd, & Wittenberg University. Better together for our community, shining the light of Christ with our neighbors and the world.

When the community is hurting, God, with Jesus Christ and the Spirit in the Holy Trinity, asks us to show up and be a light for others.

Don't forget, we are having a food box packing party tonight at 6 pm. You can still bring your shelf-stable food donations up to then if you feel called to help! We give thanks to God for the generosity of so many who help feed those who need our help in this time.

We will then turn the boxes over to St. Vincent de Paul's to help distribute to our neighbors, including our vulnerable Haitian neighbors at this time.

As the school year begins, we thank God for our affiliated universities and seminaries, which have deep connections with our church. In 1845, First Lutheran Church helped create and establish Wittenberg University (Springfield, Ohio) and its theological department, which later became its seminary, Hamma Divinity School. In 1978, Hamma Divinity School merged with Capital University's Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (or Capital Seminary for short) (Columbus and Bexley, Ohio) to form the new Trinity Lutheran Seminary. This coming together of a seminary of the American Lutheran Church and a seminary of the Lutheran Church in America helped bring forward the creation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In 2018, Trinity Lutheran Seminary rejoined Capital University, reuniting the seminary with the university. Today, the light of Christ that First Lutheran Church shared with these institutions continues to shine brightly.

A prayer for Wittenberg, Capital, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary as they start their year, adapted from the ELW,

"Eternal God, bless Wittenberg University, Capital University, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary and our other church-affiliated schools and educational institutions, that they may be lively places for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach, those who learn, and those that serve, may find you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, Amen"

We thank God for the ministry of The Rev. Dr. Ian McMichael, the new Campus Pastor at Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary.

Please join us in welcoming, The Rev. Dr. Ian McMichael, as University Pastor & Director of Religious & Spiritual Life!

Rev. Dr. Ian McMichael grew up in rural Oregon, the oldest of two and raised by two educators. He earned a BA in German Language and Literature from Pacific Lutheran University in 2013, where campus ministry and the student congregation played a pivotal role in his formation. For the whole month of August we will be collecting non-perishable food, size large (4,5,6) diapers, infant formula, personal care items etc. for Haitian immigrants. A list of suggested donations is on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Room. Donations can be placed in the front of the sanctuary.
SHOES- We are supporting the Northminster Presbyterian Church Shoe Drive through Friday, August 28th. Wearable shoes go to Waterstep, an organization that provides water solutions to
Third World countries and disaster areas. There is a bin in the Fellowship Room for donated shoes.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES- Rather than doing LWR school kits this year, the Service Committee will collect supplies for local schools throughout August and September. They can be placed in the pink
tub in the Fellowship Room.
