Reading Luke 23 after celebrating Christmas is so interesting. We just sang carols and hymns of His birth, and in Luke 23 we find ourselves taking in the cross. The juxtaposition of the manger to the cross is breathtakingly raw. Birth to death. Isn’t that the way life can be - gritty and gorgeous - all at the same time?
Imagine being Mary - watching her son grow, from infant to toddler to young child to adolescent and then to a man. Now, hanging on a cross, between two criminals, paying for sins of those who will someday be born. It’s more than I can take in. Her view had to be painful. But, it also had to be beautiful. She knew Jesus was Jesus. So, then to hear Him in Luke 23 must have reminded her of the response she had as a teenage virgin - trusting God to be God.
“Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.”
Luke 23:46 NLT
Then we move to final chapter of Luke, and find at the very end of the book Jesus ascending into heaven after rising from the dead.
“While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.”
Luke 24:51 NLT
Even in His ascension He was blessing. What a miracle to witness. To consider that the one born to die, is now alive and before the very eyes of those who followed closely He rises to heaven.
The majesty of our Savior is displayed through Luke. But this moment, this one moment, I get stuck in. Jesus blessing His people until the last moment. The very reason He came - he fulfills in birth, in death, in resurrection and in ascension: showing us the way to eternal life.
Christmas will soon be packed away, but may we remember the manger was the beginning - and we will get to spend eternity with Jesus when allow Him to be in control. The book of Luke outlines we can trust Him and our lives prove it. He’s so good.
