Diocese of Springfield (Episcopal Church)

Diocese of Springfield (Episcopal Church) The Episcopal Church in Central and Southern Illinois We are Christians

We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. We are baptized into his death and resurrection.

We strive to follow him in all things. We are Catholics

Our faith and practice is grounded in the tradition of the Church–that is, what has been handed on to us– going back to Jesus and the apostles. (No, we’re not Roman Catholics, though we have much in common with our friends in that tradition.) We are Anglicans

Our spiritual ‘DNA’ comes from the Church of England, and we are part of the famil

y of 38 churches, all over the world, in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury. We are Episcopalians

The Episcopal Church, established in 1789, is the American expression of Anglican Christianity. We are one of 110 dioceses that mutually support one another in a common doctrine, discipline, and worship. We welcome you …

… to walk with us, worship with us, work with us, and otherwise share our life.

Whitsunday was spent with the saints of St. George's in Belleville. Bishop Brian and Denise arrived the Saturday evening (the Eve) of this Principal Church Calendar Feast to take The Reverend Deacon and Mrs. Debi Hart to dinner. Deacon Hart, who is canonically resident within the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, is a recent graduate of the University of the South – School of Theology, having earned a Master of Divinity degree while being awarded the class prize for excellence in preaching. Deacon Hart is a transitional deacon who is interested in a vocational opening that we have for a full-time priest here in the Diocese of Springfield. The evening sped by as a great deal was shared, prayer was offered, and we attempted to dream the dreams of God together.

Sunday began with Bishop Burgess meeting four Confirmation candidates for their last class in interest of being “duly prepared.” The Principal Eucharist began with a beautiful prelude, incorporating organ and oboe. Offering Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto in C major; Adagio, oboist Dawn Striker was in full command of this piece and displayed impeccable intonation. Four vested youth acolytes assisted heavily with the liturgical offering. There were many new faces and it was great being with so many who take leadership roles within our Diocese, to include Standing Committee, Diocesan Council and our Cursillo Secretariat. Four were presented for Confirmation ahead of our making our Holy Communion together.

Following the Dismissal and processional Hymn, a reception was held in honor of the Confirmands and their families within the lower assembly room. The afternoon allowed time for brunch with Dean Mark Ohlemeier and his wife, Kristi. The parish of St. George’s in Belleville is acutely aware of how the Holy Spirit is not safe, but it is good. The Feast of St. Augustine

O Lord our God, who by thy Son Jesus Christ didst call thy servant Augustine to preach the Gospel to the English people: We pray that all whom thou dost call and send may do thy will, bide thy time, and see thy glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Augustine, pray for us.

Day of Pentecost

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

On the absolutely beautiful Friday in the Week of VII Easter, Denise Burgess and Mary Ellen Wells joined the landscapers of Deep Roots Landscaping to spruce-up, add to, and rehabilitate the landscaping around the Diocesan Center. Working with limited funds, the two women volunteered to work alongside the professional landscapers in interest of getting a great deal more done in significantly less time. There is a pride and stateliness being communicated outward from the Diocesan Center that lends itself well to our expression of evangelism (come and see). Thank you to all of our parish, mission and diocesan volunteers who give so much of their time, talent, energy and finances to kingdom priorities.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. (Ezra 7:27)

The Feast of St. Helena of Constantinople

Most Merciful God, who didst vouchsafe to bless thy servant Helena with such grace and devotion to thee that she didst venerate the very footsteps of our Savior; Grant unto us the same grace that, aided by her prayers and example, we too may evermore behold thy glory in the cross of thy Son. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Helena, pray for us.

The Feast of St. Lydia of Thyatira

Eternal God, who givest good gifts to all people and dost grant the spirit of generosity: Give unto us, we pray thee, hearts always open to hear thy word, that, following the example of thy servant Lydia, we may show hospitality to those who are in any need or trouble; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Saint Lydia, pray for us.
