Bishop Burgess is pleased to announce that Mr. Jeremiah Ratliff has agreed to address the 149th Annual Synod as Keynote Speaker. Jeremiah is our recently contracted Camp Coordinator and he has a great deal to share about our most recent successes as well as his vision for our summer camp program moving forward. Jeremiah is enthusiastic about all that this ministry has to offer our youth and he looks forward to engaging our parishes and missions throughout the fall and winter in order to gain support for this Diocesan ministry and surpass registration expectations for our summer 2027 offering.

A Southern Illinois native from the town of Red Bud on Route 3, Jeremiah attended Lincoln Christian University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spiritual Formation & Ministry and first became involved in church camp. In 2016, he married his wonderful wife, Caitlin and they happily celebrated their 10-year anniversary this past May. Jeremiah worked in the field of College Admissions for LCU where he became the Director of Camp Teams - a summer camp focused recruitment and ministry strategy. He continued in that role for 4 years while also providing Sunday Sermons for Scottville Christian Church.

Bishop Burgess and Denise spent the Week of XI Pentecost visiting friends and family while still on retreat. The first part of the week was spent on the Domain of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where it is they spent spontaneous time with Dr. Romulus Stefanut who serves as Theological Librarian for the School of Theology within the Jessie Ball duPont Library. Dr. Stefanut gave the Burgesses a personal tour and introduction to the William Ralston Music Listening Library & Archive (often called the Ralston Room) which is a world-class, million-dollar audiophile listening facility located on the second floor of the Jessie Ball duPont Library. In addition, Dr. Stefanut escorted the Burgesses to the William R. Laurie University Archives and Special Collections where Bishop Burgess’ graduate level Honors Thesis is permanently shelved. Tuesday evening was spent within the beautiful home of Fr. John and Harriett Runkle. A seminary classmate of Bishop Burgess and registered architect, Fr. Runkle offered the exceptional reflections during our 2026 Pre-Lenten Clergy Retreat on the Theology of Sacred Space. Bishop Burgess and Denise then traveled to Nashville where they were welcomed into the home of Bishop John and Caroline Bauerschmidt of Tennessee.

Flying out of Nashville, the Burgesses spent time with their daughter, Catherine, and their son-in-law, Christian, in Cedar City, Utah, where Christian is earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace/Aviation Sciences at Southern Utah University. This Marine of two tours of duty in the Middle East will graduate with a commercial pilot’s certificate with an instrument rating and will be a certified flight instructor (CFI and CFII).
