Over 20 campers and their 10+ counselors, staff, and spiritual directors enjoyed the presence of their Bishop yesterday for a service of Holy Eucharist and an ice cream social. Counselors and staff were commissioned for this ministry of camp directly from their Diocese, many for the first time! Gratitude was expressed for the time that Bishop Burgess was able to share with them, and for having benefit of his pastoral care, guidance, and leadership during this season of revitalization for this ministry of the Diocese.

Bishop Burgess observed IV Pentecost mightily with those of St. Michael’s in O’Fallon. This is a congregation that takes their posture of evangelism and hospitality most seriously. Ushers and greeters arrive ahead of anyone else in interest of welcoming and assisting all who come to lend their voices to common prayer. The Narthex is open, inviting, and readied for that particular welcome and that particular service.

It was wonderful experiencing a mostly full Nave. Jan Wilde (Music Director) and Brian Simmons (piano) offered a beautiful musical offering to include Postcommunion Hymn 597 which was a wonderful nod toward recognizing Father's Day. The Choir offered the Offertory Anthem, Glory to His Name, and the Hymn tunes throughout the service were augmented by trumpet and euphonium instrumentalists from the balcony.

This is a reminder that matching grants from the Diocesan Capital Improvement Fund are now available. These funds are being made available by the generosity of communicants and friends of the Diocese of Springfield who have been assured that .40 of every dollar will be designated for Capital Improvement matching grants throughout our Diocese. The maximum matching grant amount is $5,000. Please see below for the application.

The observance of the Third Sunday after Pentecost began the Eve of while joining candidate for Holy Orders Danny Shuler and his wife Elizabeth for dinner at the Centralia House Restaurant in Centralia. Family updates were shared across the table and prayers of thanksgiving were offered for the mission congregation of St. Thomas’ in Salem.

The Burgess’ then drove from Centralia to Salem to join this faithful congregation in the observance of their principal, Rite I Sunday Eucharist. As the date of Ordination to the Diaconate is fast approaching, family is beginning to gather. It was wonderful to have two granddaughters (college and high school age) read the Old Testament Lesson from Exodus 19 and the New Testament Lesson from Romans 5. Hymns were sung robustly, life milestones were recognized, open hands stretched across the chancel rail for heavenly food and those who were equipped and fed were sent out to love and serve the Lord.

St. Thomas’ is not only readying themselves for a trip to the Cathedral in interest of a service of Ordination (God willing and the people consenting), they are also preparing themselves and their church to welcome the community for their Annual Independence Day Fish Fry. To enter into Holy Eucharist in Salem is to be made part of an ongoing story that has as its introduction and finale in the proclamation of Christ’s resurrection. This mission church completes our voice of common prayer, mightily.

After a pulled pork BBQ and side-dish reception in the parish hall, the Burgess’ made their way to Effingham to meet Deacon Sotochena St. Jean and his fiance Miriame Calinte Talleyrand for a late lunch. This time was set aside in the interest of representing the Presiding Bishop and his representative, Bishop Pierre Whalon, under the pastoral interest of an ordained clergyman of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, licensed to serve in our Diocese before the altar of Trinity Church in Mattoon.

Thank you to the saints of St. Thomas’ in Salem for making our observance of III Pentecost so vibrant and beautiful, to the glory of God.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Diocesan Appeal for Capital Improvements grant funds and the renovations of St. James Chapel in Marion. To date, 64% has been donated. The first phase of renovations have been completed including the tearing down of the old, blighted vicarage and the rotted wooden ramp that connected the chapel and vicarage. The ground has been leveled and seeded so that it can be a green space that will support outdoor activities of St James Chapel or parking.

The Diocese of Springfield is now ready to make funds available for matching grants for capital improvement projects. Please see below for the application. 40% of the collected funds are available for matching grants to our parishes and missions.

Trinity Church in Mount Vernon brought glory to God by observing their Feast of Title in a big way. Saturday evening brought with it the opportunity for Bishop and Denise Burgess to meet Fr. Parker and Laura Asplin for dinner in Effingham. The time was made special by having soon to be two-year-old Asaph at table with them. Stories were shared about the progress being made and the disappointments being encountered within this pastoral size parish of our Diocese.

Sunday began within the beautifully maintained parish hall with an adult forum taught by the Bishop. Ten participated in a prayer book study that emphasized the rite of Confirmation and the Additional Directions to the Eucharistic rites (BCP 406-409). The kitchen was fully staffed, preparing food for the reception. The tables were beautifully set and readied for a royal welcome of guests and every bulletin board was up-to-date and decorated in an inviting manner.

The Rite I Sung Eucharist began with pianist Nancy Wagner offering Claude Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque, 3rd Movement – Claire de Lune. Youth acolytes were ready to assist the Bishop with his liturgical appointments and the Nave was full with family, friends, parishioners and regular communicants joining in common prayer. This is a congregation that loves to sing. Special recognition goes to Jim Adams who offered such a well-prepared reading of the story of creation from the First Chapter of the Book of Genesis (1:1-2:2). Two were “duly prepared” and presented for the sacrament of Confirmation. Bread was blessed, broken and distributed to those making their pilgrimage together. The service concluded liturgically with the piano voluntary, Go Forth with God by Martin Shaw; which was composed as an anthem that is often sung at graduations or as a school hymn.

God willing and the people consenting, The Right Reverend. Brian K. Burgess will ordain Jeff Wenzel and Danny Shuler to the Sacred Order of Deacons on the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Wednesday, June 24th at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul the Apostle. The Mass of Ordination will begin at 6:00 PM with a reception in the Diocesan Center Rotunda immediately following the Dismissal and processional Hymn. Clergy are to vest in choir dress with white stoles.
