Will our church continue to stream worship service? In our May 2025 session meeting we discussed issues around streaming, privacy and copyright. While the privacy and copyright issues are not related to each other, they are both related to streaming, so the discussion included all three issues.
Here are the issues that came up:
1) Because we stream the worship service, we are only allowed to stream music to which we have usage privileges.
MVPC pays to have privileges to a lot of worship music. But it is not all music -- for instance, it does not include the music in student piano books.
Our church secretary does research for each piece of music in each service to ascertain that we have rights to it. We pay the secretary to do this work.
If we did not stream services (or the music portion of services), we would not have to:
* do the copyright research on musical pieces, or
* pay for the usage privileges that we are paying for now.
2) Some congregation members are concerned about privacy, and do not want to appear in streamed videos. This can be addressed either by:
* Those people remaining silent during services, or
* Changing our approach to streaming, by, for instance:
* Stopping and starting the video (for different parts of service, including music) or
*Eliminating the streaming entirely
3) We started streaming because of COVID. Is there sufficient reason to continue streaming?
