John C. Bonifaz is an Amherst-based attorney and political activist specializing in constitutional law and voting rights. He is the president and co-founder of Free Speech for People. He is also the founder of the National Voting Rights Institute and a former candidate for Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Mr. Bonifaz has been at the forefront of key voting rights battles in the country for more than two decades. Mr. Bonifaz is a 1992 cm laude graduate of Harvard Law School and a 1999 recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
William C. “Bill” Newman is a civil rights and civil liberties lawyer. Mr. Newman has served as the Director of the Western Regional Law Office of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts since 1987. For over 25 years, Bill has received the highest rating (AV – preeminent) from the Martindale-Hubbell legal directory; has been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America in the area of Civil Liberties; and has been rated a Massachusetts Super Lawyer in the area of Civil Rights law since the inception of the award over a decade ago. Mr. Newman is a 1995 graduate of Northeastern University School of Law.
