Your stance on the age of the Earth and evolution doesn't determine your salvation. The sooner people get that, the sooner the Church can heal. Stop listening to divisive people like Ken Ham and Kent Hovind. They are sowers of discord among the brethren.

Well said. YEC is a stumbling block that prevents many people from choosing Jesus. They know the earth is ancient, but they see the church as believing in a young earth, so they think both cannot be true, and they discard the Bible.

Social Media Question of the Week: In light of eternity and the new creation, why do you care about the age of the earth debate among Christians?

My Answer: Just as circumcision was an unnecessary stumbling block preventing Gentiles from coming Christ in the first century and Gentile Christians from joining Christian assemblies, so today the age of the earth has become an unnecessary stumbling block preventing adult unbelievers from becoming disciples of Christ and for STEM-oriented believers joining Christian assemblies. The age of the earth is not a salvation issue and consequently appears in none of the Christian creeds, but it is an issue for evangelism and for enabling believers from all backgrounds to fellowship and minister together. As the apostle Paul explained, the mystery of the gospel is how the Holy Spirit works to break down barriers between deeply divided people to make them one in Christ and how God uses that unity and mutual love to reach large numbers for Christ. Consequently, as believers we need treat one another with charity and respect and work together to remove barriers to salvation and discipleship.

I was recently made aware of a YEC teacher who rejects science, by a friend who believes his teachings, in an effort to explain to me how they believe. This pastor, Ray McBerry, offers a complete rejection of modern science...outer space is not real, NASA fakes everything, there are no man-made satellites in orbit, gravity does not exist, etc. Makes AiG seem like real science. Here is a rebuttal of the first of his 8 messages on Biblical Cosmology.

Dr. Hugh Ross has a new book coming out about Noah's Flood. Here is my theory on the location of the local flood...it's the only location that fits the data. To hold the waters of the flood, you need a basin, and this is the only logical place for the flood. The Ararat Mountain range is on the west side, as is the proposed location of the Garden of Eden, near Tabriz

Old-earth interpretations are nothing new—nor are they the result of “liberal” theology or evolutionary theory.

Charles H. Spurgeon held old-earth views unapologetically, stating quite plainly in a sermon on the power of the Holy Ghost—delivered four years before the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859—that the earth existed for millions of years before the time of Adam.

Yet Answers in Genesis—despite their admiration for Spurgeon’s work—have sought to obscure this fact from their audience. In 2009, they began publishing “updated” versions of Spurgeon’s sermons on their website. When it came time to release "The Power of the Holy Ghost," however, the editors at AiG initially deleted Spurgeon’s comments regarding the age of the earth. They also rewrote his description of a chaotic primordial world to read:

“In Ge 1:2, we read, ‘And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.’ Our planet has passed through various stages in creation, and different kinds of creatures have lived on its surface, all of which have been fashioned by God. But before that era came, when man should be its principal tenant and monarch, the Creator initially created the world as a chaotic mass on the first day of creation.”

The very next day, AiG’s redactors walked back their revision after sharp-eyed readers caught the discrepancy. The sermon was later restored to its original state—with a caveat. The section reflecting Spurgeon’s old-earth view is now bracketed with the following note:

“Bracketed text indicates that as brilliant as Spurgeon was, even he did not understand the age of the earth issue. —Editor.”

The implications of this editorial revisionism are hard to ignore—and harder still to take seriously.

Apparently, even well-known conservative theologians like Spurgeon require the oversight of AiG's magisterium to comprehend the “plain meaning” of Scripture. And nothing says “we’re committed to the truth” like redacting your favorite preacher when he disagrees with you.

Question of the Week: If the universe is billions of years old, why do we not see any dead stars?

My Answer: We do. About 20% of the stars in our galaxy are white dwarf stars. These are dead stars in that they have burnt through all their nuclear fuel. Without the radiation pressure from nuclear fuel burning, these stars gravitationally collapse down to about 1% the Sun's diameter. They are cooling off from their nuclear burning phase. We see them at different cooling stages known as white dwarf cooling curves. The universe is much too young for any white dwarf stars to have completely cooled. For this reason, astronomers observe no black dwarf stars.
