The groundbreaking ceremony for the Springfield Missouri Temple will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Elder Aroldo B. Cavalcante of the United States Southeast Area Presidency will preside at the event.

Many historical events for the Church took place in Missouri, as Latter-day Saints worked to establish Zion during the Church’s early history. Now, more than 84,000 Latter-day Saints call the state home, meeting in around 180 congregations.

The Springfield Missouri Temple will be the third dedicated house of the Lord in the state, joining the Kansas City Missouri and St. Louis Missouri Temples.

As we prepare for the building of the Springfield Missouri Temple, we want to help prepare hearts and minds.

This video begins a journey of understanding what a temple is, why we worship in temples, and why temples matter in our lives. Elder D. Todd Christofferson and his wife, Katherine, share the Christ‑centered purpose of temples and the sacred covenants made there—pointing us to Jesus Christ and His plan for us.

As Mary Magdalene and her companions mournfully approached the Garden Tomb, two angels appeared to them and shared the clarion call of all Christianity:

"Why seek ye the living among the dead?"

"He is not here, but is risen" (Luke 24:5-6).

This Easter season we also joyfully testify of this same eternal truth—Jesus Christ is risen. He lives!

The Savior of the world was crucified and, on the third day, rose from the dead, "the firstfruits of them that slept" (1 Corinthians 15:20). His Resurrection allows all to be resurrected, and through His grace, we can find peace "which passeth all understanding" (Philippians 4:7) and "be perfected in him" (Moroni 10:32).

We invite each of you during this Easter season to "seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written" (Ether 12:41). As you do so, we testify that your Easter celebrations can strengthen your own faith and testimony that "death is conquered; man is free. Christ has won the victory" ("He Is Risen!" Hymns, no. 199).

Worship in the house of the Lord lies at the heart of our faith. Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offer peace, perspective, and eternal hope. As President Dallin H. Oaks has taught, temples "enable us to return as eternal families to the presence of our Heavenly Father.”

The First Presidency recently visited the Salt Lake Temple—one of the many sacred temples under construction around the world—to observe its ongoing renovation in preparation for reopening in 2027.

In a world seeking peace, the house of the Lord offers us the opportunity to find it.

What Is a Temple?

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we worship weekly in chapels—but temples are something sacred and special.

🌟 Temples are houses of the Lord—places of peace, learning, and eternal promises. While chapels are open to all for Sunday worship and community gatherings, temples are dedicated spaces where we draw closer to God through sacred ordinances and covenants.

🎥 This short video beautifully explains the difference between chapels and temples, and why temples matter so much to us:

📍As we prepare for the Springfield Missouri Temple, we invite you to learn more about what temples mean to us and how they bless individuals, families, and communities.
