Family and Friends,

The members of the Epiphany Lutheran Church Laurelton would like to Congratulate Reverend Marva Jenkins for 20 Years of Ordination and Ministry!

This Sunday, June 25th, 2023 we gathered to commemorate this special occasion with a service and reception. Rev. Jenkins received words of gratitude from the many she has impacted throughout her years at Epiphany and various organizations.

We would like to thank Reverend Jenkins for her 20 years of ministry and as mentioned thought our gathering, we wish her 20 more years as she leads following God’s direction and our mission of a Small Church, Grand Vision.

Sunday, 28th May 2023: Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God's presence within and among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame, bringing God's presence to all people. Paul reminds us that though we each have different capacities, we are unified in the Spirit that equips us with these gifts.
Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples, empowering them to forgive sin. We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim God's redeeming love to all the world.

Prayer of the Day

O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Hymn of the Day: “Gracious Spirit, heed our pleading”

Sunday May 7th 2023 Devotional from the Christ In Our Home Booklet

Recently I took a day trip to interview two elderly gentlemen for a story I was writing. In our email exchange about the upcoming visit, the ninety-year-old sent me detailed directions to their home one hundred miles away. But he didn't include the actual address, which was what I needed for the map app I use on my phone.

As one with a horrible sense of direction (as well as some questions and doubts), I identify with Thomas. In our reading today, he wants a map, detailed directions, some help getting to where Jesus is going. From these verses spring questions for modern readers too: What will heaven look like?
Who gets in and who doesn't?
How and when will we get there?

Yet neither directions nor an address is necessary:
Jesus is "the way" (v. 6) and will take us to himself (v.
3). We live in the mystery of unknown details about heaven, while resting in the promise that in Jesus, both our present and our future are secure.

Let Us Pray: Help us remember, Jesus, that amid doubts and distractions, you are our constant compass. Amen.

Scriptures for reflection: Acts 7:55-60; Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16; 1 Peter 2:2-10

This is the day the Lord has made!

Chris is risen, and through him all creation is made new! Indeed, "God shows no partiality" (Acts 10:34): Christ's resurrection truly brings life to everyone.

We sing hymn of praise, gather around sacred words, and proclaim God's faithfulness, power, and love in the feast of holy communion.

With the women at the tomb, we are astonished, elated, and grateful.

We depart with or to proclaim the good news of God's endless love.

Prayer of the Day: O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reign s with you and the Holy Spirit, one Hod, now and forever. Amen

The climax of what began in Maundy Thursday is reached in this service, which is full of contrasts between darkness and light, death and life, chaos and order, slavery and freedom.

The cross is vindicated as the Lord’s throne, and the fullness of salvation finds expression - creation and redemption, old covenant and new covenant, Baptism and Eucharist.

Through the Word, the sacraments are revealed as means of God’s salvation. Four sections comprise the Vigil of Easter: the Service of Light, the Service of Readings, the Service of Baptism, and the service of Holy Communion.

Prayer of the Day: Eternal God, you are the creator of the world, the liberator of our people, and the wisdom of the earth. By the resurrection of your Son, free us from our fears, restore us in your image, and ignite us with your light, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

The Vigil of Easter Service will be held today at 3:00PM

Good Friday commemorates the day when our Lord gave his life to save us from our sins.

It is a very humbling service, as we contemplate the cost that Jesus paid for our redemption. This is the one day out of the church year when it is not appropriate to celebrate Holy Communion.

On this day the body of our Lord is broken on the cross—not at the table; and on this day no celebrations are appropriate.

Join us at 11AM as we gather for Good Friday Service

Prayer of the Day: Almighty God, look with loving mercy on your family, for whom Our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and given over to the hands of sinners, and to suffer death in the cross who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

Maundy Thursday takes its name from the Latin word for “commandment,” as we remember when Jesus told his disciples, “A new commandment I give to you: Love one another.”

We mark the official end of Lent by receiving individual absolution, or forgiveness—the oil marking the cross on our forehead just as the ashes did on Ash Wednesday.

We also remember the first Lord’s Supper and the washing of the disciples’ feet.

Today we gather at 3:00PM.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. John 13: 12

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week.

We rejoice with the crowds as Jesus enters into the city of Jerusalem, waving palms and shouting “Hosanna!”

Hosanna to the Son of David Matthew 21:9

At our 10:00am service we will encounter the crowds that gathered around Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.

Prayer of the Day: Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Today’s Devotional from Christ In Our Home Wednesday, March 8th!

If you have ever felt shame, you may have wished the earth would open up and swallow you so you could disappear. Perhaps the woman caught in adultery had that wish. A group of holier-than-thou men forced her to stand in her shame before Jesus and everyone. She was a sinner, and they would make an example of her. Their aim was not only that she be judged and put to death, but that Jesus might be trapped in blasphemy. There would be two to condemn. Two for the price of one.

But Jesus escapes the snare. Calmly, matter-of-factly, he shifts the focus from the woman to that group of reli gious leaders. From her sin to their sin. The judgment: on their lips dies off; they slip away. Still, she stands there, but Jesus will not condemn her. Instead, he frees her.

If you have ever felt shame, you may have wished someone would free you from it for good. My friends, Jesus' words are as much for you as for the woman of long ago: “I do not condemn you. Go in peace.”

Reflection: John 7:53 - 8:11

Let us Pray: Condemned to the cross, dear Savior, you have taken away our shame. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

Scriptures for the today: Psalm 128; Ezekiel 36:22-32
