Love . Faith . Visionary
In Memoriam
Dr. Rod Goodsell
January 29, 1945 to December 29, 2021
"I love you, but I could never love you as much as Jesus." A sweet phrase many students who attended Metro Christian Academy in its early years remember often hearing from Dr. Rod Goodsell. A true man of God, many use the words love, faith, and visionary to describe Goodsell. Serving as the founding superintendent from 1983-1987, Goodsell was among a group of Tulsa business leaders who had a vision for a Christian school and made it a reality.
“I’m so grateful for his willingness to move forward when it was nearly impossible to start a school from scratch and be accredited the first year of opening,” said Bob Beard, Metro alum and former staff member. “He never gave up. He believed in what God had called him to do in the face of controversy and impossible odds. His faith allowed Metro to be birthed and carry on for decades – changing the lives of thousands of students for the better.”
This giant of a man had the most gentle spirit and a great love for his students. Through great personal sacrifice, Dr. Goodsell took an enormous step of faith to help create Metro Christian Academy. Guided by a vision from God, he sought to develop a Christian school encompassing the Tulsa community and surrounding areas.
“There would be no Metro Christian Academy without Coach Goodsell," said Coach Pat Foster, Metro alum, current Middle School Teacher, and Varsity Baseball coach. "His influence on me and on others is a big reason why I chose to become a teacher and coach.”
Because of Dr. Goodsell's faithfulness to God, Metro Christian Academy has been a real and viable non-denominational college preparatory institution since the early 1980s.
Dr. Goodsell’s children also graduated Metro Christian Academy in its early days. His son Scott in 1985 and his late daughter Missy in 1988.
Goodsell went on to serve as superintendent of Shiloh Christian School in Springdale, Ark., for a time as well. He most recently served as senior pastor of The Church of Northwest Arkansas in Springdale.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Springdale, Arkansas's Westfield Chapel Funeral Home.
