2 DAYS TO GO! 🏌️💜

On Monday, Sept 14, golfers from across the Dayton area will come together for the Dayton Swing for Charity.

But this isn't just about golf.

It's about remembering the men and women who answered the call to serve our country — and honoring those who made sacrifices that many of us can never fully repay.

This year, as we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the meaning is even more powerful. Many of the Ohio Purple Hearts we honor answered that call because of what happened on Sept 11, 2001.

So as we prepare to tee it up Monday, we remember why we swing.

Remember.
💜 Honor.
🏌️ Serve.
❤️ Give back.

To our golfers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters — thank you for being part of something bigger than a day on the golf course.

Two days. One mission.

I shared at our last meeting of a Villanova frat brother in 1976, Jim Berger, who died in the South Tower on the 101st floor, evacuating 156 people at AON Consulting in under 15 minutes before being trapped when the second plane hit. He left behind wife Suzanne and three young boys, Nicholas 8, Alex 6 and Christian 2.

Jim's heroic story involved , who reached out to his widow by way of a NY Times article shortly after the tragedy (see below). Bruce's connection to the Berger family was featured an ABC’s “AMERICA.01” with Connie Chung on 11/2/01 (watch at gcHWvtWHY6g ) and https://www.tiktok.com//video/7546108433855040782 .

His heartfelt rendition of "Thunder Road" was shown at the end of Jim's memorial Mass on Oct 5, 2001. Bruce's album released in late 2002, "The Rising" contains many songs relating to 9/11. Perhaps the most moving is track #12, "You're Missing" which he wrote in tribute to Jim Berger, echoing Suzanne's lament about her husband. Bruce penned “You’re Missing” after seeing Jim’s profile in The NY Times, where the title of the profile was “A Fan of the Boss.” Bruce reached out to Suzanne, they had a few conversations, and those conversations resulted in “You’re Missing.” The version below is my absolute favorite, and it is performed by Bruce during rehearsal for an appearance on SNL.

God bless all the families of the victims of 9-11, both those who perished that horrible day and those that have passed since due to 9-11 related illnesses, as well as those battling 9-11 related illnesses today.

For all those that are missing, we pray for you as we know you are in God's eternal light!

Timothy Cardinal Dolan

For people of faith, memory is a noble virtue and a duty. I’m talking to you on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, which affected the entire nation, the whole world, but especially here, in New York. It’s a day of memory. We will never, ever forget the names, the people, what happened, and also, that we came back stronger than ever.

PATRIOT DAY — 25 YEARS

On Sept 11, 2001, our nation was changed forever.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless men and women who answered the call to serve our country in the years that followed.

Many of the Ohio Purple Hearts we have the privilege of honoring today belong to men and women whose decision to serve was shaped by 9/11. They stepped forward when their country needed them — and many paid a tremendous price for that service.

That makes this year's Dayton Swing for Charity especially meaningful.

🏌️ We aren't simply playing golf.
We are honoring heroes.
💜 We are remembering their sacrifice.
❤️ And we are supporting those who served.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, may we never forget the lives lost, the heroes who responded, or the generation who answered the call.

Remember. Honor. Serve.

Never Forget.
