Racism and sa**sm running amok.

“According to one detainee, a guard told him that
‘It’s part of my job. I have to make your life miserable so that you request your own deportation.’

Everything we know suggests that this quote is an accurate description of what’s happening….

The truth is that none of the claims made by anti-immigration hardliners about the benefits of driving the foreign-born away has survived contact with reality.

The virtual end of net immigration hasn’t led to a boom in jobs for the native-born. Growth in the working-age population has stalled, but so has job creation, and the employment rate for native-born adults is lower, not higher, than it was before the pogroms began….
And the idea that immigrants are, as a group, especially crime-prone, has been extensively debunked….

The atrocities being perpetrated by ICE — atrocities that are almost surely far bigger and worse than we know about — are in part instrumental, a way to frighten immigrants into self-deporting. But is there any real doubt that mistreating and terrorizing people, especially people of color, is for some MAGA types a goal in itself — something they always wanted license to do?

As The Atlantic’s Adam Serwer wrote in a justly famous essay, ‘The Cruelty Is the Point.’ And what does it say about us as a nation if we accept this?”

The Trump administration’s attack on immigrants isn’t about rule of law, crime or jobs. It’s racism and sa**sm all the way down

History repeats: “I do not believe the American people will uphold any political party that puts political exploitation above national interest. Surely we Republicans are not that desperate for victory.” - Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith, Republican, 1950

BREAKING NEWS: Starting today, Georgia is canceling nearly half a million voter registrations in one of the largest voter roll removals in U.S. history.

These voters have been classified as “inactive” for not voting in the last two general elections or because they changed home addresses. Some people have not been able to vote because of a lack of transportation, loss of a home, unreliable mail delivery, or other reasons.

Voting should not be a use-it-or-lose it right — period.

Mind you, Georgia already cancelled a record-setting 534,000 voter registrations in 2017.

Take three minutes to make sure you are registered to vote RN at WeAll.Vote/georgia.

🌎 ”The wide universe is the ocean I travel, And the earth is my blue boat home…”
If you’ve ever sung “Blue Boat Home,” you’ve felt the beauty and wonder at the heart of our Unitarian Universalist faith.
We’re thrilled to share this new profile of Peter Mayer—the UU singer-songwriter who wrote this beloved hymn—who has spent 30 years crafting music filled with meaning, joy, and spiritual depth:
https://religionnews.com/.../folk-singer-peter-mayer.../
Skinner House also recently turned the song into a beautifully illustrated children’s book:

Mayer reminds us that even in a complicated world, we can still find wonder—and sing our way home to it.

RACINE, Wis. (RNS) — For 30 years, Peter Mayer has made a living singing songs about the spiritual meaning of life — and the foibles of humanity.

Justice actions you can take this week!

TO DO NOW: The Texas Senate’s budget bill, SB 1, is up for vote on the Texas House floor TODAY, Thursday, April 10. This budget appropriates $1 billion of public funds for private school vouchers, which would drain needed funding from public schools. Please call your Texas state representative and let them know you oppose this part of SB 1, as well as SB 2, the school voucher bill. To find your representative, go to:
https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home

If you prefer to send an email on this issue, go to:
https://www.raiseyourhandtexas.org/250408-schoolfunding/...

Voting Rights: The Texas Senate recently passed a bill (SB 16) that imposes more restrictions on voting, requiring those registering to vote to present proof of citizenship beyond a driver’s license or four digits of their Social Security number. This bill makes “illegal voting” a criminal offense with jail time. The bill is now referred to the House. Call or email your house representative (see link above).

Voting Rights: Congress is considering HR 22, the SAVE Act, which would force voters to prove their citizenship upon registering to vote. This act would hurt voting rights for many groups, including married women who don’t have passports as well as low-income, elderly, unhoused, and many more. Call your congressional representatives!
