Esau gave up his birthright for a bowl of meat/flesh stew. Carnality comes from the Greek word sarx which means flesh. Being carnal fundamentally means giving up something spiritual to satisfy something natural. The story of Esau has always been tragic to me because he had the perpetual blessing/favor of God in his hand and gave up it to satisfy a temporary fleshly need with a bowl of "sarx."
It is a cautionary tale so we can remember to make the main thing the main thing, and not fooled by the greatest deceiver of all, the enemy. There is a state of favor that the enemy can NOT remove us from (can you say Eden). His alternative plan: to fool us into giving it up for something always cheaper.
