Verse: "'Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me'...His father saw him...and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him." Luke 15:12,20

Devotion: This wise father knew that the way to keep his child was to let him go. He also knew that he had poured God's truth into that boy since childhood, and this father trusted in those truths. Some parents, however, hold their children so tightly that they lose them. This dad knew that the time had come to open his hand and let his son go.
When the boy "came to himself" and headed home, the father saw him "when he was still a great way off" (Luke 15:17,20) and ran to him. No pointed fingers or "Where have you been?" or "How could you do this to your mother?" Just open arms. The boy came walking, but the father went running. Here was a truly repentant son and a faithful father receiving him with open arms.
May we be wise about both letting go and receiving back.

Code Word: ENVIRONMENT
Like the prodigal, you may have removed yourself from the environment of God's love. But He hasn't moved and will never stop loving you and waiting for you to come home.

Prayer: Lord, help me to let go of what I cannot control and focus on abiding in the environment of Your love. In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Devotion: How many parents have stood upon this verse during seasons of difficult dealings with wayward sons or daughters? There is no promise here that the child will never sow some wild oats. The promise is that the child will eventually return home to the truth upon which he or she was raised. Of course, the operative word in all of this is the very first word of the verse - train. This promise is for parents who "train" their children "in the way [they] should go."
There is no more powerful example of this truth than Jesus' story of the prodigal son. Ironically, the story is not about the son or his brother. The story is really about the father. The story begins, "A certain man had two sons" (Luke 15:11). The father stands center stage. Let's see what we can learn from him.

Code Word: TRAIN
We all need training. To train others in the ways of the Lord takes patience and perseverance...time and energy. But it is accompanied by a precious promise.

Prayer: Lord, You are faithful and I hold to Your promises today, although I do not see the answer as yet. In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. 1 Peter 3:15

Devotion: God has called us to share the gospel truth, and that is another reason why we study His Word. We need to know well the message He has commanded us to share so that we are "ready to give a defense" of the gospel.
So may we approach the Bible with a deep reverence, even with a fear that we might mishandle or misrepresent God's truth. We are to be "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15), and this is a serious assignment. Our message should always be centered in - and issue out of - God's holy Word.
What a high calling and awesome task, to "be diligent to present [ourselves] approved to God, [workers] who [do] not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." In the end, may we know God's approval rather than feel ashamed.
One more thing. Like all that God calls us to, this command to know His Word is for our good and His great glory.

Code Word: DILIGENT
Be diligent in your Bible reading. It is far better to take one verse and take time to meditate on it, letting its truth sink deep into your heart, than to speed-read ten chapters.

Prayer: Lord, may Your Word dwell in me richly today. In Jesus' name, amen.
-The Believer’s Code, O.S. Hawkins

Verse: The law of the LORD is perfect...the statutes of the LORD are right. Psalm 19:7-8

Devotion: God's Word is the bread of our spiritual life. It nourishes and sustains us; it prompts growth; it fuels activity for the Lord.
Another reason we believers spend a lifetime faithfully, regularly studying the Scriptures is so that when we stand before almighty God, we may know His approval. We are being good stewards of God's truth when we make time to study, memorize, and meditate on His Word. Don't you long to hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21)?
What, then, is the manner by which we should go about our task of Bible study? We are to be diligent students, willing to work hard, to dig deep, to consult commentaries, and to use Bible dictionaries to confirm and correct our understanding of key terms. Yes, this is hard work, but this kind of Bible study equips us for "the work of ministry" (Ephesians 4:12).
Dedicated believers devote themselves to the wholehearted study of God's Word.

Code Word: BREAD
Think of your Bible as bread that can sustain you for the day. And remember, He taught us to pray for daily bread. You need to devour it day by day.

Prayer: Lord, give me this day my daily bread. I wait for a fresh word from You. In Jesus' name, amen.
