Verse: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." Luke 23:34

Devotion: In the incarnation, we see God's amazing grace: God "dwelt among us...full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). The word translated dwelt means "to take up temporary residence as though one lived in a tent." Jesus took on human flesh in order to pay the penalty for our sin, that He might bring us to the Father.
John 1:14 also tells us that Jesus was "full of grace." From the cross, He prayed for the forgiveness of those who were killing Him, and that is grace. That is unmerited favor.
In addition to being "full of grace," our Lord was "full of...truth." We are truly free only when God's grace leads us to know the truth that we are sinners in need of a Savior, and Jesus is that Savior. Jesus came not to talk about God, but to show us what God was like so that children might know the Father as intimately as theologians can.

Code Word: UNDESERVED
Grace is getting what you do not deserve. Mercy is not getting what you do deserve. And God is rich in both of them. They are the gifts of His grace to you.

Prayer: Lord, when I did not deserve it, Your grace reached down to me where I was and found me. Such unmerited favor! In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

Devotion: Jesus was born!
He lived out His thirty-three years in this world. He was the unique God-man. As God, He walked on water, calmed the storm, healed the sick, and rose from the dead. As man, He got thirsty and tired; He felt sorrow and pain.
Jesus did not cling to the brightness of His glory, nor did He shun us from our sinful condition. Instead, He humbled Himself to become a servant and to clothe Himself in flesh. That's why Jesus understands every emotion, temptation, and pain we experience.
And Jesus came not as a full-grown man, but as a helpless, tiny seed planted in the womb of a young Jewish virgin. Later, Jesus was born, not in a clean and sterile hospital, but in the dung and filth of a Bethlehem stable. This is amazing condescension: in Jesus, God Himself took on the garment of human flesh.

Code Word: UNIQUE
That is Christ. He was not God and man. He was the one and only, unique, God-man. There has never been anyone like Him.

Prayer: Lord, nothing I could face today is foreign to You. Lead me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: Be filled with the Spirit,...giving thanks always for all things to God. Ephesians 5:18,20

Devotion: An attitude of gratitude to God is evidence that we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Our looking upward with thanksgiving no matter our circumstances, is something we are able to do because of the Holy Spirit's presence within us.
If we are allowing ourselves to be filled with the Spirit, we will find ourselves living with a spirit of heartfelt thanks. A Holy Spirit-filled person is always giving thanks and, at the same time, is thankful for all things. A Holy Spirit-filled person finds reasons to give thanks in the darkest of nights and driest of deserts. After all, our God is with us always, and that is a great reason to always give thanks!
So, the inward evidence of a song in our hearts gives us confidence that we are being filled with the Spirit. Then, our continual attitude of thanksgiving to God for all things is upward evidence of the Spirit's presence in us.

Code Word: THANKSGIVING
God calls us to give thanks when? "Always." God calls us to be thankful for what? "All things." We can't be filled with the Spirit and not give thanks.

Prayer: Lord, please keep my eyes open today to the many things around me that I can thank You for! In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. Proverbs 4:7

Devotion: All parents need wisdom for training their children in the way they should go.
In his epistle, James noted that the world's wisdom is rooted in the secular, the sensual, even the satanic. Worldly wisdom has contributed to much of what is wrong with our culture; the drug epidemic, the abortion holocaust, and a national debt of astronomic proportions are only three examples.
Never have we needed wisdom more than we do today. But the wisdom we need is the wisdom of the Word, not the wisdom of the world. "The wisdom that is from above," wrote James, "is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy" (James 3:17). This kind of wisdom is the God-given ability to perceive the true nature of circumstances in order to apply His will to matters.
And God makes wisdom available to us parents as we train up the children He has entrusted to our care. We just need to ask.

Code Word: WISDOM
There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is the accumulation of facts. Stay in the library long enough, and you can have knowledge. Wisdom is what we need. It is the ability to discern and use the facts wisely. We get wisdom from God.

Prayer: Lord, I need the pure wisdom of Your Word today and not the pseudo-wisdom of this world. In Jesus' name, amen.

Verse: In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19

Devotion: Words have power. They can bless or break; they can help or hurt.
Too many children have heard a frustrated parent say, "You are worthless and will never amount to anything." And the children believed it, allowing those words to shape their self-image and determine their self-worth.
Other children had parents affirm them: "You are important, and God has something for you to do that no one can do quite like you can." These children believed that message and ultimately acted on it.
Jesus said when rebuking the Pharisees: "For every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:36-37).
May we, as parents, rely on the Spirit to help us control our tongues.

Code Word: RESTRAINT
Remember this important truth: you never have to take back what you do not say. Show some restraint...and you will be glad you did.

Prayer: Lord, put a guard over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips (see Psalm 141:3). In Jesus' name, amen.
