2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12. Memorial of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
CHARLES LWANGA was one of 22 Ugandan martyrs who converted from paganism. Though he was baptized the night before being put to death, he became a moral leader. He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith. He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and demands of the Babandan ruler, Mwanga.

Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism. However, his chief assistant, Katikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule. The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifices to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom converted to Catholicism?

When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burnt to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly so death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, “Kotanda! (O my God!).” He was burned to death by Mwanga’s order on June 3, 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions on June 22, 1964. Charles is the Patron of the African Youth of Catholic Action.

With grateful hearts, we thank Father Christian as he celebrates the 22nd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on May 29, 2004. For more than two decades, he has faithfully answered God’s call with humility, compassion, and a true shepherd’s heart — celebrating the sacraments, preaching the Gospel, and walking alongside our parish community through moments of joy, sorrow, and grace. We are deeply grateful for his devoted “yes” to the Lord and for the many ways his priesthood continues to bless the lives of all who know him. Please join us in praying for Father Christian and offering congratulations on this beautiful milestone.

Meet Tina!

Recognizing the cultural stigma surrounding counseling in the Vietnamese community, Tina is passionate about breaking down barriers and promoting mental well-being.

Tina's path to counseling is anything but ordinary. After thirty years in corporate IT and deep involvement in Faith Formation ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes in Houston, a family member's mental health challenge redirected her life entirely — toward the work she was always meant to do.

Her story begins further back. Tina and her family fled Vietnam in 1975 as part of the "boat people" exodus, a courageous journey in search of freedom that would shape her understanding of resilience and human need for generations to come.

1 Peter 1:18-25. Our reading reminds us of the incredible love of God for us expressed in Jesus’s sacrifice.

Beloved:
Realize that you were ransomed from your futile conduct,
handed on by your ancestors,
not with perishable things like silver or gold
but with the precious Blood of Christ

And God asks us, in return to care for each other.

O Holy St. Philip Neri, Patron Saint of joy,
you who trusted Scripture’s promise
that the Lord is always at hand
and that we need not have anxiety about anything,
in your compassion heal our worries and sorrows
and lift the burdens from our hearts.
We come to you as one whose heart swells
with abundant love for God and all creation.
Keep us safe through your loving intercession,
and may the joy of the Holy Spirit which filled your heart,
St. Philip, transform our lives and bring us peace.

Amen.
