God calls His people to lives that include showing respect for the authorities placed over us. At the time Paul wrote to his coworker Timothy, “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions” (1 Timothy 2:1–2), the Roman world had been ruled by a series of tyrannical and cruel emperors for decades.
When Jesus spoke of the duty of people to “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” (Matthew 22:21), the Roman emperor was Tiberius Caesar, portrayed by noted historians of his time, Tacitus and Suetonius, as a mean-spirited tyrant and a man ever ready to spill blood.
Sometimes, in His providence, God shows His dominion in ways not readily understood and chooses to work through untoward and unlikeable people. He may even use non-Christian leaders and unchristian nations to further His gracious plans. In living as faithful citizens, we are called to carry out the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, including paying taxes. At the same time, we are to demonstrate our highest allegiance to God by being people of faith who evidence our eternal hope in Christ in all situations and who offer prayers for those who rule over us.

What is more difficult to believe: a fable about a man defeating a deadly dragon by eating it or a prophet’s prediction that the Creator God would defeat death itself by swallowing it? What does Isaiah, the prophet, mean by saying God “will swallow up death forever” (Isaiah 25:8)? Does God eat?

The mighty, eternal, creator God is life Himself and has no need for sustenance. In order to “swallow death,” God took on our human form. We die because of the corruption of sin. To “swallow death,” the incarnate Savior “ate,” or consumed, death by taking the sin of the world onto Himself on the cross of Calvary. Jesus did not die for Himself. Jesus died your death for your sin. So it is that when a sinner is baptized into Christ Jesus, he or she is “baptized into His death” (Romans 6:3). Thereby, “you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God”
(Colossians 3:3).

Even with saving faith in Christ, we still have Christian funerals. But by faith we wait, hope, and fully expect to be raised in the resurrection to eternal life, to be present at the great feast of salvation. In Christ, the enemy, death itself, has been transformed for us by God now to be but His divine remedy, freeing us from sin and eternal death. Therefore, by faith in Christ we no longer need to fear death but rather can see it as a peaceful sleep from which we are promised to be awakened to eternal life and the wedding feast of the Lamb in His kingdom.

Traditionally celebrated the first Sunday in October, Lutheran Women in Mission Sunday can be celebrated any time.

This year’s theme continues a four-year cycle focusing on the LWML Mission Statement — As Lutheran Women in Mission, we joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving others. For Lutheran Women in Mission Sunday 2026, we focus on Supporting Missions. This theme is based on the texts: Ecclesiastes 3:9–15, Galatians 2:1–10, and Mark 10:35–45.

Christ Jesus our Lord asks us to be wise stewards of His good gifts. St. Paul, while proclaiming the Gospel, was also concerned for those who suffered. There were so many mission efforts taking place. As believers today, we also are eager to follow the example of Christ and aid those in need. The Spirit of God places that eagerness to serve upon our hearts. We can’t be everywhere to aid the missions, firsthand, that are set before us. The Lord does allow us to support those efforts that go forth in His name. May the Lord grant to us supportive hearts.

From the beginning, God implanted His life-creating power into His creation with the command “Be fruitful and multiply” to animals (Genesis 1:22) and to humans (1:28), with one important difference. You are not an accident or only a product of biology. Every human being is a personal soul. So we confess, “I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them” (Small Catechism, Creed, Explanation of the First Article). Because of our inherited sin, however, “the soul who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4). Nevertheless, God’s design is for life—eternal life. He declares, “I have no pleasure in the death of anyone” (18:32). Because God so loves you, He sent His Son to take away your sin by the shedding of His blood on the cross. Therefore, “we preach Christ crucified, . . . the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:23–24). Christ died to sin for you. By Holy Baptism, you died with Christ and are raised to new life in Him. The love of God is yours today by faith in the cross of Jesus Christ. The Father’s declaration of Jesus now becomes yours: “My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
