Landscaping is an act that announces God’s kingdom. When we work together to renew, beautify, and restore, we are announcing and pointing to the new creation. Last weekend, a dedicated crew spread mulch, pulled weeds, and worked to make our grounds crisp and welcoming!

I’ve never known a person to pray for a difficult life. Most of us ask God to go before us and smooth out the wrinkles. We pray that the hills will be lowered and the valleys be raised. Maybe we don’t use these exact words, but we are essentially praying for an easy life. This is how I typically pray for my family. I ask God to eliminate problems from the lives of my children. I pray that my wife Sara will have smooth sailing through her day. I ask that God would deal with and resolve the problems I might encounter in the day or week ahead. And I wonder if I am doing myself and my family a disservice by praying this way.

The Bible is filled with passages touting the benefits of hardship, suffering, and difficulty. These challenges are lauded for what they generate in our lives: hope, perseverance, and faith. The difficult times in our lives refine us and ultimately make us more like Jesus (who, by the way, experienced the greatest degree of difficulty imaginable). This is not an encouragement to seek out difficulty. But when it comes, we can take great consolation in knowing that what God produces through it is of great value.

Mother’s Day has just passed, and for many of us, it brought a mix of emotions. Some experienced joy and gratitude, celebrating the love and influence of mothers. Others felt the weight of loss, longing, or complicated relationships. Most of us likely carried a bit of both. We often want to quickly define moments like this—good or hard, blessing or struggle. But our first impressions don’t always tell the whole story. Over time, God has a way of bringing meaning, healing, and growth in ways we don’t immediately see.

So instead of rushing to label what this weekend meant, we can hold it gently. We can thank God for the love we’ve known while also bringing Him the places that still ache. He sees every part of our story—both joy and sorrow—and He is present in all of it. As we move into this week, may we keep our hearts open to God and to one another, trusting that He is still at work in every story here.

On Sunday, we looked back at the past ministry year and celebrated God’s faithfulness to our church family. A family eats together, right? So that’s what we did after the service!

It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore, judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. (1 Corinthians 4:4-5)

If you’re like me, you want to reach conclusions about people and events. That person, politician, colleague, or community member is great. Or awful. Or foolish. Or smart. This major event that happened in your life is a blessing. Or a tragedy. When someone or something happens, we feel an impulse to put it in one of these categories. When we can make a judgment about something, we give it handles. It helps us move forward.

However, I’m not sure how qualified I am to make these assessments in the short term. My evaluation of people has not always been spot on. Some people who initially gave me pause ended up being wonderful once I understood them better. Others who I thought were fantastic at the start ended up creating problems down the road. Events that seemed providential at the time generated greater challenges as time passed. Major disappointments have resulted in rich blessings after a year or two. So who knows besides God? Keep your heart open. Hold your conclusions loosely. God sees so much farther down the road than we do.

“A sinner saved by grace.” That’s typically how we’ve understood ourselves. In Western Christianity, we’ve been taught that our great need is for God’s forgiveness due to our sinfulness. We tend to understand God’s love in terms of mercy. We have rebelled, made a mess of our lives, and now need a savior to rescue us from what we’ve done. Of course, this is all 100% true. It is a biblical picture of our situation. And yet I wonder if there might be other ways to think of ourselves in relation to God. Rather than seeing ourselves as sinful people, it might also help us to think of ourselves as small people.

The problem with seeing my sin as the whole issue is that it puts me at the center of the universe. It makes me the focus of God’s work. The world and God’s work revolve around me. But when I understand myself in terms of my smallness, I begin on the margins of importance. I am overwhelmed that the God of the universe would even be aware of me, let alone care for me. Think about this little speck of dirt we call Earth in a vast galaxy in a vast universe - too vast to even imagine. Is it more remarkable that God would forgive us when we were his enemies? Or even bother to consider us in the first place? We’re really not that big of a deal. Still, in our smallness, the God of the universe sent his own Son to live among us. It is miraculous that God would show mercy to us when we rebelled against him. Perhaps it is even more miraculous that God bothers with us at all.
