This week we celebrate the feast of Pope St. Leo the Great, who lived during the fifth century. In 430 AD St. Leo became a deacon in Rome. Soon after, Leo was sent by the Pope on a diplomatic mission to Gaul. While he was in Gaul, the reigning pope died, and St. Leo was elected as the new Bishop of Rome. During his time as pope, St. Leo fought against many heresies and taught at the Council of Chalcedon on Christ's human and divine natures. Pope St. Leo the Great also led a delegation which successfully prevented Attila the Hun from invading Rome. St. Leo died in 461 and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1754.
