My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory Forever!

What a journey! You may ask, “What Journey is that?” Let me tell you.

On January 25th we read the Gospel from Saint Luke (19:1-10) and we heard about the curious Zacchaeus who climbed a sycamore tree so that he may see Christ who was going to pass that way. We know the story, Zacchaeus responded and invited Christ to his home. This was a life changing experience for Zacchaeus, and hopefully for us these past four months have been spiritually enriching and enlightening. It was the grace of the Holy Spirit that allowed Zacchaeus to come down from the tree and today, Pentecost Sunday, we receive that same spirit that inspired Zacchaeus, given to the Apostles and now shared with us.

Take a moment today to review in your mind the events that our Holy Orthodox Church has laid before us. After the Sunday of Zacchaeus we had the Sundays before Lent. These were followed by the Great Lent as the spiritual instruction given to us. We followed Christ through his passion during Holy Week and we came to church to celebrate the Glorious Resurrection. The Paschal season instructed us on the importance of our life in Christ in lieu of our Baptism and we followed the Apostles as they witnessed the Ascension. Today, four months later, we reach the pinnacle of revelation, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Pentecost. What a spiritually enriching encounter with our Lord. And it does not end there.

Our lives, by virtue of our Baptism and Chrismation, continue our life with God and we continue the work of the Orthodox Church. Father Justin Popovich states in his writings that the lives of the saints are a continuation of the Acts of the Apostles. We are part of that as well, we are brought to a new life by the giving of the Holy Spirit. Ours is a life transformed, transfigured and filled with the Holiness of God. This is our legacy as Christians and it is our Salvation as well.

I extend to you my sincerest prayers and best wishes on this joyful and Holy Day. May the Holy Spirit fill you with all that is good and life-giving.

Your brother in Christ,

Fr. John

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Glory to Jesus Christ!
Glory Forever!

When I witness much of what goes on in our national events, and those of our local communities, and even those concerning the Church and Christianity itself, it is no wonder there is so much confusion and misinformation. The fact that we are in an age of information does not mitigate the fact that much of what we see, read and hear is not factual at all. Coupled with our obsession with personal beliefs, misinformed biases, and our ever protected feelings, it is no wonder that so many people are confused and disillusioned. Look at Sacred Scripture, read it and believe anything you want. As a matter of fact, why don’t we just make up the Jesus that fits our needs. In many instances, a very many instances, everyone just checks the box on who we want Jesus to be: it is a Christological buffet.

So, when you look around and see the 40 thousand different denominations, it is clear to understand why the Orthodox Church protected its spiritual inheritance. By the time Christianity became recognized by the Roman Empire there were many questions, dogmatic and practical, that had to be addressed. And so they did. The First Ecumenical Council held in 325 AD began the body of doctrine that would guide the church for hundreds of years. Not only that, The Holy Church gave us the body of writings that we now know as “The Bible.” No small undertaking by a group of dedicated, spiritual and holy leaders of the church undertook such a monumental task. By the way, even the date of Pascha was determined at this council. Most important of all is their recognition that the Holy Spirit is guiding them to recognize and embrace the Truth of our faith, and expressing it to all believers: The Nicaean Creed.

This is certainly a reason for the commemoration today: the Fathers of The First Ecumenical Council and the legacy that they gave to the Holy Orthodox Church.

Your brother in Christ,

Fr. John

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Christ is Risen!
Indeed He is Risen!

Since the Paschal season was always the time of instruction, baptism and a new beginning for those entering the church, it is no wonder that our Paschal Gospels continue this theme. Let’s review: the two immediate Sundays following Pascha are Saint Thomas and the Myrrh Bearing Women, each with its message given to us by those who were closest to Christ. These readings give us the personal witness of the followers of Christ and how they were amazed by the events which unfolded in front of them. The foundations of our faith were witnessed and experienced by those who were with Our Savior and are given to us so that we may also become witnesses and belivers.

Our church then continues its Sunday Gospel readings from Saint John and each of the readings not only have to do with miracles performed by Christ, but also give us insights to the sacraments that are to perpetuate our connection with God and with each other. We read about the paralytic who waited for the water at the Pool of Siloam to be stirred up by an angel of the Lord. We then read about the Samaritan Woman, Photini, who Christ encountered at the well in Samaria. Finally, today we read of the Man Born Blind who was also healed of his affliction by Christ. And how was that performed: Christ used his spittle mixed with the dust of the earth and applied it to the blind man’s eyes. In each of these healings water became the main element to enlightenment, healing and re-creation. This is exactly the message our church presents to us: the waters of Baptism give us the same healing and re-creation as given to the people in these gospel readings. What an important reality for us to ponder: we are no different than the people we read about, and we are healed just as they were by virtue of our Baptism.

This is truly an instance of rejoicing. The events that we remember today are the same events given to us through the Holy Sacraments (Mysteries) of the Church. They are not historical events that remain in the past, they are cosmic realities that live within us today.

Your Brother in Christ,

Fr. John
