Our little faith community of "Christ the Prophet" is not what many might consider a parish. No marble altar. No stained glass windows. No sacristy for getting vested for Mass. Mass is in our home at the dining room table. We Break Bread where we always break bread. Where we have toast and scrambled eggs, or tuna sandwiches, or cajon-style catfish. What we also have as a parish is a "street ministry. And a strong prophetic voice. Whether it is holding a vigil in opposition to an ex*****on or marching with our sisters and brothers in a "Black Lives Matter" demonstration or showing the larger community that the universal, unconditional, and eternal love of God is, always and everywhere, on the side of the poor, the marginalized, the oppressed. That is why we exist. That is our mission. We call it "the Gospel Life". In keeping with that mission, we the Ecumenical Catholic Franciscan parish of "Christ the Prophet" categorically refuse to co-operate, support, or collaborate in any manner whatsoever with the Donald "King Herod" Trump administration in the use of sending soldiers or other militaristic agents out into the streets or into the homes or workplaces or sacred spaces (like our parish) of those who are strangers in this land. We don't have a sanctuary any more than we have stained glass windows. "Sanctuary", for us, is a verb. Something we can do and will do. Paz y Bien!

Our county (Maury) in TN had a Labor Day picnic today. I'm guessing maybe 60 people attended. That doesn't sound like many from where I came from in the Pugent Sound area of WA. But for us here, that was huge! And they were enthusiastic, and yes, JOYFUL! Several candidates for office were in attendance, or their surrogates. I learned something new and significant at the picnic: TN isn't as "red" as most people think. But sadly, we are one of the LEAST LIKELY TO VOTE states in the country. And most of those are likely Democratic voters! They don't vote because they think, "What's the use? Everybody votes Republican here!" Well, we intend to stop that horrible trend! VOTE! AND VOTE BLUE! At the very least, TN needs to be a purple state in play for national elections! I guess I became a "de facto chaplain" for the motley crew. I was asked to "say the blessing" before eating and at the end, a "sermon". In the "sermon", I noted that "I was a Franciscan priest and that some may be familiar with what is called "The Prayer of St. Francis". In that prayer, there is a verse that says, "...where there is sadness, let me bring joy." Well, "Joy" was THE key word of the Convention. It's too bad for them, but Trump as his ardent supporters can't experience "joy". And that just isn't because they are going to loose the election! Which they will, of course! They can't experience JOY because they are idiots! (some applause) I don't mean that as a pejorative! "Idiot" comes from the ancient Greek, "idios". It means one who has no understanding of or appreciation for THE COMMON GOOD. Let me say something about authentic joy. It doesn't really come from having MY "WANTS" satisfied. Joy comes from helping the community attain all of its "NEEDS". That's the common good. And Trump and his ardent supporters don't understand or appreciate that. It is all about them. And that's why there's no joy in Trump's "Mudsville". Trump strikes out!"

Terrence Moran, a friend and leader in ending gun violence, is now in the hospital. We hold him in our prayers.

If anyone thinks this is mere "political correctness", please educate yourself by reading Scripture.

We will be opening again for those vaccinated for Mass in our home on Pentecost. We will also offer that Mass in the name of those who have died in gun violence. More of them have died in the last twenty years than those in the pandemic. If the pandemic was ONLY met with "thoughts and prayers" like gun violence has been, there would be no vaccine. So for Pentecost, we hope to "light a fire"! We need to stop being fearful and remain stuck in our little rooms! We must, and we will, put an end to gun violence by doing what is necessary with MANY ways to stop it. All pieces of the puzzle. "Thoughts and prayers" for victims, all by itself, is not worth a thing! Scandalized by that?! I suggest then that you read the letter of James. Hear what is said about useless "faith" in the absence of "works". Get 'er done!
