About Us:
Swan’s Point Baptist Church located in the Spring Grove community of Surry County, VA is a dynamic and growing church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Nathaniel Mitchell, Jr.!!!! With a rich history that spans more than 147 years, the church was organized with 15 members under the directorship of Rev. Sumler of Bowers Hill, VA. The church received its name from Swanns Point Road, on which it was located. The road, however, received its name from the Swann’s Farm, the home of the late Colonel William Swann, who, according to history, purchased the farm in the year 1635. Several attempts were made to change the name of the church, but because it was connected to the early history of the state and county, it remained the same. Shortly after the church was organized, Rev. Sumler and his faithful followers erected a small building and continued to work, but not without struggles of that time. After Rev. Sumler, the following ministers served as pastors of the church: Rev. Davenport of Cape Charles, VA, Rev. H. Harris of Richmond, VA, Rev. C. Allen of Burrowsville, VA. Rev. Allen served as pastor for eighteen years, and it was during his pastorate in 1891 that the current edifice was erected. During Rev. Allen’s eighteen years at Swan’s Point, many improvements were made, one being the installation of the bell. Over the next several years, Swan’s Point was pastored by: Rev. L. E. Kiser of Petersburg, VA, Rev. B. Brown of Petersburg, VA, Rev. Albert George of Surry, VA, Rev. Samuel Wilson of Norfolk, VA, Rev. F. D. Yates, Rev. O. Allen, Rev. Robert E. Lee and Rev. R. P. Deberry from Williamsburg, VA, Rev. Hayes Watts and Rev. Jenkins from Portsmouth, VA. In 1957, Rev. A. Gaines of Richmond was elected pastor and served for ten years. Under his pastorate, the church was inspired to buy a life membership in the NAACP. On March 1, 1969, Rev. Kizzie of Richmond, Virginia, was elected pastor and served for 27 years. Under his leadership, many improvements were made, many programs were initiated, and a life membership was purchased in the SCLC. Dr. Nathan Quick of Petersburg, VA, served as our next pastor followed by Rev. Ball, III, of Richmond, VA. Under the leadership of Dr. Quick, the church’s mission statement “God’s Business…Top Priority” was adopted, and the idea of extending the existing structure to include an office area and Fellowship Hall was reevaluated, but it was constructed and occupied during the pastorate of Rev. Ball, III. On March 2, 2014, Rev. Dr. Leo Whitaker of Chesapeake, VA, was named Interim Pastor. Swan’s Point Baptist Church lives its mission statement by engaging the church and community in Christian discipleship and education through a five-fold model: Spiritual, Study, Social, Service, and Support. Programs initiated under our five-fold model for the church and community include: a Christian Reading Ministry, Back to School/School Supply Ministry, the Widow’s Ministry, providing supplies for local Nursing Homes, gifts and scholarships for local graduates, visitation and support of the sick, confined, and elderly throughout the year, community support to local agencies and organizations (Fire Departments, Rescue Squads, Baptist Children’s Home, Project Joy, Office on Youth, Fraternity and Sorority Programs, American Red Cross, Cancer Society, etc.), International Outreach, annual adoption of needy community families during holidays and throughout the year, support of the local public school system and institutions of higher learning, medical support for needy families, support for community families in crisis, support for local food pantries and clothing closets, and highway clean-up. We are prayerful and confident that as Rev. Mitchell continues to lead us as the Lord leads him, the Swan’s Point Family will continue be a church that worships, witnesses and serves with a spirit of excellence. “Bridging the Past; Blessing the Present; Birthing the Future.”
