Thanks everyone for helping the Ridgewood Cemetery maintenance today. Several stones were straightened, stood up, and some were glued back together. Thanks James, John, and Steve.
Leigh Ann and Deana C. cleaned many stones (and yes, I did a few too!) Took a few pictures too.
Here’s a poem I wrote years ago inspired by our little cemetery.

Woman in a Cemetery

Her shoulders rolled slightly forward and hands in her pockets
A self-conscious attempt to keep from hugging herself
How often does she come to stand and watch the stone
Carefully counting the years and the memories.

To me cemeteries are living histories
To explore
Like my children looking for the earliest dates
When we visited.

Faded stones tell the story.
A new child born each year only to be lost
A year or two later.
Eight small eroded markers trace the lives of a family.

Our family plots
(How I hate that unserene harsh word)
Are scattered across the rolling hills
Marked by a rusting iron fence
Or tall old cedar trees at each corner
Or by the polished granite that tells of
My father’s life of 1906 to 1986.

The back of the headstone,
At my mother’s insistence,
And one sister’s dismay,
Lists the names of his children
For wanderers in a hundred years
To know my family
Like I know about the infants under the trees
In the oldest section.

Look for announcements of our scheduled September cleaning day.
