🙏✨ On this day that we celebrate Martin Luther King .... Sharing a past thought from the Franciscan Corner: At times, the frantic pace of the modern world prevents us from listening attentively to what another person is saying. Halfway through, we interrupt him and want to contradict what he has not even finished saying. We must not lose our ability to listen”. Saint Francis “heard the voice of God, he heard the voice of the poor, he heard the voice of the infirm and he heard the voice of nature. He made of them a way of life. My desire is that the seed that St. Francis planted may grow in the hearts of many”. ((Pope Francis, encyclical: Fratelli Tutti)
In these trying times may the "Power of Love" overcome the love of power...

🙏 🌟🌠A Sharing from the Little Portion .... Soon we will be celebrating the 4th Week of Advent. Today we begin to pray with the "O Antiphons" in preparation for Christmas ... Take some time in your day for a little quiet and reflection:
O Wisdom …. Come to teach me the way of truth.
O God of Israel …Come to redeem me with an outstretched arm.
O Root of Jesse …Come to bring me new life; do not delay.
O key of David …Come to open my prison doors and set me free.
O Radiant Dawn …Come to bring light to the darkness in my life.
O King of all Nations …Come to save me and give me peace.
O God-With-Us, Emmanuel …Stay with me and send me forth in your name.

🙏🍁🍂 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: Right now, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC), more commonly known as COP30, is being held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025. Concerned leaders and people from around the world are gathered and recognize the beauty of all creation, and are asking all of us to take care of our common home, Mother Earth. ST. FRANCIS saw God’s goodness in all creation, he could sit on Mt Sabasio and watch the sun rise and greet the day, be wrapped in God’s goodness and be caught up in prayers of thanksgiving. Let us join together and pray for those attending COP 30, who will tackle the climate crisis through collaboration of governments, businesses and civil society. This is what is ours to do!

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: This past weekend - Saturday, October 4th we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. This year we also mark the 800th Anniversary of his wonder composition of the Canticle of Creation... "Be Praised My Lord ..."

The Canticle of the Creatures - Composed by Saint Francis of Assisi
Most High, all-powerful, good Lord, all praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong.
No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through all you have made,
and first my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and through whom you give us light. How beautiful is he, how radiant in all his splendor; Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

All Praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars;
in the heavens you have made them, bright, and precious, and fair.
All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brothers wind and air, and fair and stormy, all the weather's moods, by which you cherish all that you have made.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Water, so useful, humble, precious and pure.
All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom you brighten up the night.
How beautiful is he, how cheerful! Full of power and strength.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.
All praise be yours, my Lord, through those who grant pardon for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial.
Happy are those who endure in peace, By You, Most High, they will be crowned.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Death, From whose embrace no mortal can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin!
Happy those she finds doing your will! The second death can do them no harm.
Praise and bless my Lord, and give him thanks
And serve him with great humility.

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: When “Sister Death” came to St Francis, he said to his followers: "I have done what was mine to do, may Christ teach you what is yours to do." For several years I have written short Franciscan reflections for the Franciscan Corner. It has been a privilege to share St. Francis with you. You perhaps have called St Francis the patron saint of animals, or as a statue for your garden. There is so much more to St Francis and I hope these reflections have deepened your understanding of who St Francis was and is. We will celebrate his feast day on Saturday, October 4th. I bless you with the words from the Scripture passage found in Numbers 6:24-26, and which St Francis made his own: “May the Lord bless and protect you. May the Lord cast his merciful eyes upon you. May the Lord look toward you and grant you peace. May the Lord bless you. Amen. Amen!”
Soon I will be moving to Portland... I will not be connected to 'The Little Portion' and I will no longer be writing the weekly Franciscan reflections. I have done what was mine to do. May you continue to listen and let Christ teach you what is yours to do-- as a follower of the The Little Portion, as a member of your parish, as a resident of your city, as a citizen of the United States, and as a member of the entire human family. Pace e Bene! Sr. Joanne Clavel, osf

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: Francis, what shall we call you, how do we describe you? Shall we call you Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone? Francesco ("the Frenchman")? Poverello ("the Poor One"? or shall we describe you as “a man of poverty," "a man of peace," a lover of the outcast, "a man who loves and protects creation, a “holy fool" who embraced simplicity and humility, the patron saint of animals and ecology, the founder of the Franciscan order, or a mystic and mirror of Christ? We have seen and described you through all these names. The name that best describes you, however, is "Saint Francis." You became what you love. In our own vocations, on the path we have chosen, may we be true followers of Jesus and become what we love.
Thank you to Sr. Joanne

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: Yesterday, September 14th was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. On Wednesday (September 17th), Franciscans all around the world celebrate the day Francis received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, on his body. At the beginning of his conversion, the cross spoke to Francis. “Go, rebuild….” At the end of his life, he received the marks of the crucifixion on his body. In between, he conformed his life to that of Jesus so much that he was transformed. He became like Christ, not only inwardly, but outwardly as well. We become what we love! What is it, or who is it that we love?

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: St. Francis had a very deep devotion to Mary because he saw her as the model disciple who kept saying, "Let it be done to me according to your word." The church celebrates her birthday on September 8. We might sing “Happy Birthday” to her. Francis would have sung, “Hail, holy Lady, Most Holy Queen, Mary, Mother of God, Ever Virgin! Chosen by the most holy Father in heaven, consecrated by him, with his most holy beloved Son and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. On you descended and in you still remains all the fullness of grace and every good.” (Salutation of the Blessed Virgin). Let us join Francis in praising Mary on the day we celebrate her birthday. -Sr. Joanne Clavel

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: The journey and the dream ..."Go, rebuild my church". Francis, go! Don’t stand here. Get going. Reminds me of the apostles after Jesus ascended into heaven. The angels said “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky?" (Acts 1:11) They returned to Jerusalem, to the upper room and remained there in prayer as they were directed, waiting for the Holy Spirit and then acted! Francis spent lots of time in prayer, he knew he needed to be in contact with this God who had told him to go and rebuild the church. But then he acted! So with us, we need to be in constant contact with Jesus whom we follow. We bear his name: Christians. We received that name when we were baptized. Let’s not stand around, let’s get to work, rebuild the church, which ever definition of church you identify with at this moment: yourself, as a temple of the Holy Spirit, the church that is your parish by participating in some action the parish is engaged in, or the larger church, as we celebrate this jubilee year, by being a pilgrim of hope. There’s lots to do, let’s get going!

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: The journey and the dream...
Andy Williams sang "To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go.... " This could be the theme of the life of Francis. He dreamed the impossible dream--rebuild the church! He fought the unbeatable foe--corruption in the church. He bore unbearable sorrow-- those who followed him changed his vision. He went where the brave dare not go- to befriend the l***r, the outcast. That was his quest, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. What is your quest? Are you willing to follow it, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far...?

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: Go, rebuild my church. What church? The San Damiano chapel where he was? Other dilapidated churches in Assisi? First, he had to rebuild himself; the "church" that he was. "Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God lives in you?" (1 Cor 3:16) He was home from war. His spirit was broken. He was lost. What's my life all about? He had to rebuild his life, he had to find meaning. He did that by contemplating what he had heard while he put stone upon stone, while the chapel was being rebuilt. His inner self and his outer self mirrored each other. To some extent, we all need to rebuild the church; our inner church- ongoing conversionand the outer church- what in the parish can you help rebuild? The youth program? An organization? An outreach ministry? Like Francis, think about these things and contemplate what is yours to rebuild. -Sr. Joanne Clavel

🙏🌻 A Sharing from the Franciscan Corner: Francis understood that God is not remote and distant, a God who has nothing in common with creation. Rather, God is unstoppable goodness—a God who simply can’t wait to give everything away and to love us where we are. God comes to us—that is God’s humility—and we are called to love God in return.
