This is the sermon that I would have preached this week if I still had a pulpit. I have one correction though. He says Jesus was never told to stay out of politics. Actually, Jesus WAS told to stay out of politics - by those in power. He ignored them.
Across the nation, people will stand—not against America, but for what America promised to be.
And right on cue,
the pearl-clutching begins.
“Hate America Day.”
“Fake pastor.”
“Heretic.”
“Demon.”
All because I dared to mention Saturday’s protest.
They twist the story—again—turning love of country and its people into “hate,” and dissent into “disrespect.”
But real patriotism doesn’t bow to power.
It holds it accountable.
It doesn’t SILENCE the people.
It LISTENS to them.
It doesn’t write books on how to protest politely.
It writes new chapters of justice when the old ones failed.
The cameras will hunt for chaos.
The headlines will chase fear.
But the real story won’t make the evening news—
neighbors linking arms,
voices rising in peace,
hearts demanding better.
Remember—Jesus flipped tables when the temple became a marketplace.
Rosa refused to stand when standing meant submission.
Dr. King marched when marching was called rebellion.
So when they say, “Be quiet,” remember—every prophet was told the same thing.
And here’s the irony:
The same people fighting to infuse religion into public schools by posting the Ten Commandments are the same ones telling pastors like me to stay out of politics.
So what they really mean is:
“Stop challenging OUR politics.”
Jesus was never told to “stay out of politics.”
Much of what He said and did was deeply political—
not partisan, but revolutionary.
He challenged systems of power, injustice, and oppression—and called that the Kingdom of God.
And hear me on this—even if you disagree with me. Even if you called me ugly things. I’m still advocating for you.
For your right to insult me in the comments.
For your right to speak freely.
For your freedoms.
For your healthcare.
For the "American Dream" we all once believed in.
Because this isn’t Republican vs. Democrat.
I’m solidly neither.
Neither political party represents the whole of the Gospel of Jesus.
Yet only one party has been claiming to represent Christianity for the last five decades.
And any party that claims to represent Christian values should be scrutinized MORE by believers, not LESS.
Saturday is about America—a nation born from people who refused to bow to unchecked power.
And it’s about Jesus—who never told us to defend the empire, but to stand with the oppressed.
So as a pastor, I’ll keep praying, speaking, and standing—for all of us. Because love doesn’t stop at the party line.
We weren’t sent to make peace with corruption.
We were sent to call it out.
If your faith never shakes your comfort,
never challenges your politics,
never questions your traditions—
then it’s may not Christ you’re following.
You may be worshiping yourself.
