ST. PATRICK — SPENCERVILLE, OHIO

St. Patrick traces its roots back to 1859, when it began as a Catholic station of Delphos.

That detail matters.

Before it became the parish people know today, St. Patrick began as an outpost of Catholic life—formed because families in and around Spencerville needed the Church closer to home.

The parish built its first church in 1860, becoming a mission shortly afterward. As the community grew, a second church followed in 1876. By the mid-1900s, that building had deteriorated, and in 1948 the parish made the decision to build its third—and present—church.

That means Catholics in this community did not simply inherit one building and preserve it. They built, rebuilt, and invested again and again across generations.

Its care also passed through nearby Catholic centers—Delphos, Landeck, Van Wert, and eventually Delphos again. That history reveals something larger about Catholic northwest Ohio: many communities did not begin with large independent parishes. They began as stations and missions served by priests traveling from stronger parish centers.

St. Patrick may not have the scale of Lima’s larger parishes, but its significance is different.

It represents persistence.

For more than 165 years, generations have been baptized, married, buried loved ones, and built Catholic life here.

And that kind of history matters.

If you have a connection to St. Patrick—Mass, family, memories, old traditions, parish events—drop it in the comments. Stories, old photos, or little-known facts… let’s document it.

Congratulations, Deacon Evan!

"A mother helps her children grow up and wants them to grow strong...capable of accepting responsibilities, of engaging in life, of striving for great ideals.

A mother then thinks of the health of her children, teaching them also to face the difficulties of life...to see the problems of life realistically and not to get lost in them, but to confront them with courage, not to be weak, and to know how to overcome them.

A good mother also helps them to make definitive decisions with freedom. We are victims of a trend that pushes the provisional, as though we wanted to stay adolescents. Let us not be afraid of life commitments, commitments that take up and concern our entire life!

The mother teaches us how to be fruitful, to be open to life and to always bear good fruit, joyful fruit, hopeful fruit, and never to lose hope, to give life to others, physical and spiritual life."

~Pope Francis

O God, who chose your servant Leo XIV in succession to the Apostle Peter as shepherd of the whole flock, look favorably on the supplications of your people and grant that, as Vicar of Christ on earth, he may confirm his brethren and that the whole Church may be in communion with him in the bond of unity, love and peace, so that in you, the shepherd of souls, all may know the truth and attain life eternal.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

One year ago today, the College of Cardinals elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as the 267th Successor of Peter. Taking the name Leo XIV, he became the first U.S.-born pope in the history of the Church. We give thanks for his ministry and continue to pray for our Holy Father.
