Are you planning to go to church tomorrow? There are so many reasons not to go, aren’t there?
There’s the fact that the week has been so full, you don’t even know if you’re coming or going, and you need this day to be at home with family.
There are other things planned for the day, as athletics and competitions have taken a priority in our lives, especially on weekends.
Maybe you’re a mom of littles and you feel anxious because you don’t want to leave your baby in the nursery. Or perhaps you have toddlers who grab your legs and cry when you try to leave them in children’s church. After a long week, you’re not sure you have one more battle left in you to fight.
Or perhaps due to divorce or the loss of a loved one, you’re now going to church alone and this fills you with dread.
It’s strange, but church can indeed feel lonely sometimes. You look around at the smiling faces and feel your own brokenness begin to crack under your fixed smile. You wonder if you’re the only one who feels this broken.
There’s a whole list of reasons not to go. Many of them seemingly good and valid. But friend, there will always be reasons not to go.
There is no perfect church, perfect schedule, perfect scenario, perfect preacher, or perfect congregants. There just isn’t. So why should we go anyway? Why should we make the effort to make church a priority in our lives, even with all the reasons to the contrary?
Because where two or three are gathered in God’s name, He is there in their midst.
Because there is something sacred about coming together collectively in worship.
Because teaching our children about faith is pivotal, and church is one way we teach them.
Because our children learn what is important to us by how and what we prioritize.
Because we know a God who is worthy of being praised and worthy of being worshipped.
Because God loves you. And because He loves me.
I’ve been the anxious mama who wondered “why bother?” if I’m just going to end up in the nursery. I’ve been the brokenhearted one sitting alone in church week after week. I’ve been the one looking around at smiling faces and finding it hard to plaster a smile on my own.
So, I get that it’s hard sometimes.
But friends, God longs to meet us in worship. He longs to touch our hearts, speak to our minds, and impact our souls. Is church attendance required to be with God? No. But church is one of the beautiful and sacred ways we can draw near to the Almighty.
I hope you’ll go this week. And if you find yourself feeling uncomfortable for any reason at all, remember you’re not alone. We each come in our mess and brokenness to praise a God who loves us anyway…who loves us always. ❤️
