We will continue last year’s consideration of dream interpretation as a spiritual practice. They will look at the tradition behind it, its cultural context, and the personal benefits it offers the spiritual seeker. They will also go into how it is done. Finally, we all may take a peek at a real dream or two and what they mean.

Creation Spirituality - Sunday August 10, 204 - 6:00PM
Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC
Creation Spirituality advocates that God permeates all things with divine energy, affirming the paradigm that humanity is created blessed, rather than created tarnished by original sin. Christ, then, becomes a liberating, reconciling energy that extends to individuals and all of society’s communities, institutions, and structures. Leading to the ability for transformation into expressions of compassion and in this expression of God’s love, we become the Creation that God dreamed and intended.

Black Elk Native American Spirituality - Sunday September 8, 2024 - 6:00PM
Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC
Black Elk, known through Black Elk Speaks, is a Native American mystic. His visions—shared in dance, art, and music—are often offered as representative of indigenous people's spirituality. We will look at the ideas and life of this shaman to see his surprising and inspiring message—one particularly apt for creation spirituality communities such as S.T.A.R. in these contentious times.

Equally diverse are the ways people interpret dreams. Some do it one-on-one. Others stick to their own dreams. Dreams are also interpreted in groups of folks, who sometimes even act them out—adding and improvising as they go. Again, this is no exhaustive list of interpretive methods. As part of our service, we will learn more about this interesting subject and important tool of spiritual formation.

Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC
Our reflection will look at the philosophical, psychological, and political forces that made it necessary to have a personification of evil opposing the goodness of the Divine. Andy Crosland, with a contribution from Bill Taylor, will help us see the meaning Satan has for Creation Spirituality and for those of us trying to make sense of the evil in our world today.

In the 6th Century, an Irish holy man set foot on a tiny Scottish Isle and changed the course of Christianity. He was highly regarded by both the Gaels and Picts, being considered one of the twelve apostles of Ireland. He founded the important abbey on Iona – which became a dominant religious and political institution in the region for centuries.

Reflection: Visio Divina – Praying with The Eyes of Your Heart -
Sunday May 26, 2024 - 6:00PM
Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC
Visio Divina is translated as “divine seeing” and is related to the prayer form, Lectio Divina – “divine reading.” However, instead of Scripture, this form of prayer uses visual elements to help set our minds on prayer, allowing God to speak into our heart through images. It becomes a way to pray through art, using icons, paintings, sculpture, stained glass windows or scenes in nature.

Creation Care Enablers - Sunday April 28, 2024 - 6:00PM
Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC
Good environmental stewardship has a significant overlap with good economic stewardship. We are divinely created to depend on God’s creation for our material existence. For the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the raw materials we use for everything else.

Creation includes the natural environment, the built environment (our houses, cities, and economies) and all the creatures that depend on those environments. We have been charged with safeguarding the fruitfulness and productivity of creation for all its inhabitants, including people – enabling creation to flourish at its very best.

What If Jesus Said This - Sunday April 14, 2024 - 6:00PM
Fellowship Hall * Central United Methodist Church * 233 North Church Street * Spartanburg, SC

Wouldn’t it have been a great deal easier if there was no mistaking what Jesus said? So that what he meant would be clearer?

Imagine what he could have added and how Christianity might share in a different understanding – why this matters and that doesn’t? Or what influence Jesus’ more understandable words could have for those who claim to follow his teachings?
