We are celebrating the way folks from New River Cooperative parish have been serving our community throughout the month of May. Piney Creek UMC and Shiloh UMC have been packing and delivering food, and Mt. Zion UMC has been offering critical items through their non-food pantry!

As we prepare for our Maundy Thursday service this afternoon at 3pm, we are so thankful for this beautiful loaf of bread that Rebecca Babbitt baked for us. It’s truly a work of art.

Jesus once told his closest friends and followers something that was drastically different from the conventional wisdom of their time:

“Whoever wants to become great must become a servant.”

It is pretty challenging for us to hear too.
Our culture tells us in many ways every day that greatness means power, influence, and being on top.

Jesus says greatness looks like love, compassion, humility, and serving others.

Not living to be secure the best for yourself, but living to serve others.

Where is one place you could practice that kind of love this week?

James and John ask Jesus for the best seats in the kingdom. They want power, security, and status. They think Jesus is the best way for them to get what they are looking for.
So Jesus reminds the disciples that the rulers of the world use power to dominate and control. Then he says, “Not so with you.”
Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.
The way of Jesus does not look like getting an advantage over others. It looks like giving yourself away in love. It looks like humility, compassion, and a life devoted to others.

What would it look like for you to choose service over self-promotion this week?

This painting is called “Come unto Me,” and it hangs in the sanctuary at Cox’s Chapel, one of the churches in our cooperative parish. It’s a favorite of mine, not because I think this is actually what Jesus looked like, but because of how simple it is and how open his posture feels.

Sometimes we imagine Jesus as distant or hard to approach. This image reminds me that he is not aloof or trying to impress anyone. He is welcoming the weary and open to those who are struggling.

The more we become like Jesus, the more our lives begin to take on that same posture.
