Prayer of Confession (please stand)
God, You know everything and You know me. You know I say things I don’t mean, when
I’m swimming in hypocrisy, and when I’m spouting off stuff that sounds good but that
masks my own agenda. If I claim to know You but don”t obey You, I’m lying to
everyone, including myself. If I claim to love You, but I hate a brother or sister in Christ,
I’m lying again. If I love people I can see, how can I truly love You, whom I can’t see? I
condemn folks for things I excuse in myself. The time is coming when everything I hide
about myself will be revealed, and all those secrets will be made known to all. In Your
mercy, Lord, forgive and heal me. Through Christ, help me to be the person You have
made me to be.
Assurance of Pardon:
We bless You God! You didn’t go off and leave us. You didn’t abandon us defenseless
when our sins would have torn us apart. Instead, we’ve flown free from their fangs, free
from the trap of ourselves. That grip is broken and we’re free as birds in flight. Your
strong name is our help! Lord, You know those who are Yours, and You will help us
depart from iniquity as we name the name of Christ. In Him we are forgiven!
Gloria Patri “Glory Be to the Father” #813
Glory be to the Father
And to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen Amen

Responsive Reading: Psalm 124:
Leader: If the Lord had not been on our side–let Israel say
People: If the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us,
Leader: They would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against
us;
People: The flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us,
Leader: The raging waters would have swept us away.
People: Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
Leader: We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has
been broken, and we have escaped
All: Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Dedication of the Offering
Scripture Readings
Matthew 16: 13-23
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
“Who people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;

do others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what

about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are

4

the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 and whatever you loose onJesus replied,
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and
blood, but by my Father in heaven.

18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this
rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19
I will
give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, earth will be loosed in heaven.”

20 Then he ordered his disciples

not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah

21 From that time on Jesus began to
explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the
hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must
be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

22 Peter took him aside and began to
rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 Jesus
turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me;
you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Galatians 1: 1-10
1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God
the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers and sisters with
me,
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
4 who
gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the
will of our God and Father,
5
to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
6
I am
astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the
grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 which is really no gospel at
all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to
pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should
preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s
curse!
9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to
you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
10 Am I
now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to
please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of
Christ

Love divine all love excelling
Joy of heav'n to earth come down

Prayer of The People
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us
our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Affirmation of Faith-The Apostle’s Creed
We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the
Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church*,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
(*meaning the universal Christian church—all believers in Jesus Christ)
Hymn: Since I Have Been Redeemed page 515
Verse 1
I have a song I love to sing
Since I have been redeemed
Of my Redeemer Savior King
Since I have been redeemed

Call to Worship (In Unison):
Psalm 119:169-172
Leader: Let our cry come before You. O Lord; give us understanding
according to your word!
People. Let our plea come before You; deliver us according to your word.
Leader: Our lips will pour forth praise for You. Teach me your statutes.
People: Our tongues will sing of your word. For all your commandments are
right.

Hymn: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee page 90
Verse 1
Joyful joyful we adore Thee
God of glory Lord of love
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee
Opening to the sun above
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness
Drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness
Fill us with the light of day
Verse 2
All Thy works with joy surround Thee
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee
Center of unbroken praise
Field and forest vale and mountain
Flowery meadow flashing sea
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee
Verse 3
Thou art giving and forgiving
Ever blessing ever blest
Wellspring of the joy of living
Ocean depth of happy rest
Thou our Father Christ our Brother
All who live in love are Thine
Teach us how to love each other
Lift us to the joy divine

Verse 4
Mortals join the mighty chorus
Which the morning stars began
Love divine is reigning o'er us
Leading us with Mercy’s hand
Ever signing, marching onward
Victors in the midst of strife
Joyful music leads us sunward
In the triumph song of life

Prayer of Confession (in unison)
1 Timothy 6: 9-10
Loving Lord, we have seen again and again how You provide for our needs. But
sometimes we still want more. Lust for money brings trouble, and when we long to
be rich we fall into temptation. We can be trapped by many foolish and harmful
desires that plunge us into ruin and self-destruction. The love of money is the root
of all kinds of evil. Going down that path, craving more and more, we can lose our
footing and wander away from faith in You. We pierce ourselves with many
sorrows and live to regret it bitterly. Please forgive our greed.

Assurance of Pardon:
Loving God, You have defended my cause and redeemed me; You have preserved
my life according to Your promise. “I wash my hands in innocence, and go about
Your altar, oh Lord, proclaiming aloud Your praise and telling of Your wonderful
deeds.” We can be in Your presence and offer our praise because of Jesus Christ,
our Savior, in whom we are forgiven.

#813 Gloria Patri “Glory Be to the Father
Glory be to the Father
And to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen Amen

Responsive Reading: Psalm 119: 153-176:
Leader: Look on my suffering and deliver me, for I have not forgotten Your
law.
People: Defend my cause and redeem me; preserve my life according to your
promise
Leader: Salvation is far from wicked, for they do not seek out your decrees.
People: Your compassion, Lord, is great; preserve my life according to your laws.
Leader: Many are the foes who persecute me, but I have not turned from your
statutes.
People: I look on the faithless with loathing, for they do not obey your word.
Leader: See how I love your precepts; preserve my life, Lord, in accordance
with your love.
People: All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.
Leader: Rulers persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at your
word.
People: I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoils.

Leader: I hate and detest falsehood but I love your law.
People; Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws.
Leader: Great peace, have those who love your law, and nothing can make
them stumble.
People: I wait for your salvation, Lord, and I follow your commands.
Leader: I obey your statues, for I love them greatly.
People: I obey your precepts and your statutes, for all my ways are known to you.
Leader: May my cry come before You, Lord; give me understanding
according to your word.
People: May my supplication come before you; deliver me according to your
promise
Leader: May my lips overflow with praise, for you teach me your decrees
People: May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous.
Leader: May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.
People: I long for your salvation, Lord, and your law gives me delight.
Leader: Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me.
All: I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten
your commands.

Doxology -Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow #815
Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost, Amen
Dedication of the Offering
Scripture Readings:
1 Timothy 6: 6-10
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the
world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will
be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and
into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money,
have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
James 3:13-16
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life,
by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter
envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15
Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual,
demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder
and every evil practice.
Exodus 20:17
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s
wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to
your neighbor.”
Sermon: Choose Being Content or Being Envious
Hymn: Little Is Much If God Is In It page 661
Verse 1
In the harvest field now ripened
There's a work for all to do
Hark the voice of God is calling
To the harvest calling you

Chorus
Little is much when God is in it
Labor not for wealth or fame
There's a crown and you can win it
If you go in Jesus' name
Verse 2
Does the place you're called to labor
Seem so small and little known
It is great if God is in it
And He'll not forget His own
Chorus
Little is much when God is in it
Labor not for wealth or fame
There's a crown and you can win it
If you go in Jesus' name
Verse 3
When the conflict here is ended
And our race on earth is run
He will say if we are faithful
Welcome home My child well done
Chorus
Little is much when God is in it
Labor not for wealth or fame
There's a crown and you can win it
If you go in Jesus' name

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us
our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

Affirmation of Faith-The Apostle’s Creed
We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and
born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of
the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church*,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Worship (In Unison):
Leader: Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill?
People: Only those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Leader: Who may worship the Lord?

My great Redeemer's praise,

Jesus! the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease

'Tis life and health and peace

He sets the prisoner free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind behold your Savior come And leap, ye lame for joy

Prayer of Confession (in unison)
Holy Lord, I've come to worship today like I do most Sundays, but I'm confronted by this question: who may worship in Your sanctuary? Who may come into Your presence? Can I do that? Forgive me, heavenly Father, because I have not led a blameless life. I don't always do what is right. I don't always tell the truth in complete sincerity. Sometimes I gossip and harm my neighbors' reputations, speaking evil of people who think I am their friend. There are times when I admire flagrant sinners, but I think "church" people are boring. I don't keep my promises; when a better offer comes along. I'll break commitments to go after what suits me better. I want to be paid back by everybody who owes me something. I can't say for sure that a bribe wouldn't change my testimony- I have to look out for number one. Is it any wonder I feel like I'm on shaky ground?
Assurance of Pardon:
We have been justified by faith, so we have faith with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of what Jesus has done for us, He has brought into this place of undeserved grace where we now stand. We confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory. God shows his love for us in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us. And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, He will certainly save us from God's condemnation. Praise God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit, because in Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

RESPONSIVE READING PSALM 15
Leader: Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?
People: The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart;
Leader: Whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others;
People: Who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the LORD; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind;
Leader: Who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
All: Whoever does these things will never be shaken.

Scripture Readings:
Exodus 23: 1-3
"Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness. " 2 “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, 3 and do not show favoritism to a poor person in a lawsuit."
4
Proverbs 6: 16-19
16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17
19
18 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Exodus 20:16
16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."
Sermon: "Be Honest"
Hymn: “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” page 400
Verse 1
Glorious things of thee are spoken
Zion city of our God
He whose word cannot be broken
Formed thee for His own abode
On the Rock of Ages founded What can shake thy sure repose With salvation's walls surrounded
Thou may'st smile at all thy foes
Verse 2
See the streams of living waters Springing from eternal love
Well supply thy sons and daughters
And all fear of want remove
Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows their thirst to assuage
Grace which like the Lord the Giver
Never fails from age to age
5
Verse 3
Round each habitation hov'ring See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a cov'ring Showing that the Lord is near
Thus they march the pillar leading
Light by night and shade by day Daily on the manna feeding
Which He gives them when they pray
Verse 4
Savior since of Zion's city
I thro' grace a member am
Let the world deride or pity I will glory in Thy name Fading is the world's best pleasure All its boasted pomp and show Solid joys and lasting treasures
None but Zion's children know
