The annual meeting of Union Cemetery Association was held last Friday night. Here are some highlights of that meeting.
1. The finances are in tolerably good condition considering the increasing costs due to inflation that we have all endured over the past five years.
2. We still need donations which make up about 30% of our budget. Our long range plan is to reduce reliance on donations.
3. Proposed Illinois Bill HB 5058 would radically change how Cemetery Associations would care for cemeteries such as Union Cemetery. This bill was proposed by Rep. Natalie Manley of the 98th district Cicago area. We are reliably informed from Amy Elik's office that the bill will not make it out of committee this session. Further the bill is defective, lacking sufficient detail at this time. We will continue to moniter to see if the bill dies completely or comes back in revised form. State Rep. David Friess (Red Bud) was also responsive in looking into this.
4. The annual spring clean up day is this coming Saturday March 28. The weather forecast is sunny and a little cool with mild wind. In the event of unexpected rain, the make up day is April 11th. The public is invited to help. We will walk the grounds, remove tattered flowers, etc. Several men are planning to bring chainsaws to cut up a downed tree, etc.
5. No fee increases will be implemented this year. Union Cemetery fees seem to align with other comparable cemeteries.
